NFL Playoff Picture – who’d make the playoffs if the season ended today?

While some fanbases are already turning their attention to the 2016 draft, technically no team has yet been 100% eliminated from making the playoffs. TECHNICALLY. So, how is the current playoff picture shaping up following a Sunday full of action? Below is the list of all 32 teams, seeded #1-16 in their conferences. How far away is your team from clinching a postseason berth? There will be an update article after the Monday Night Football showdown between the Bengals and the Texans.

AFC

#1 – New England Patriots (1.000) AFC East Champions #2 – Cincinnati Bengals (1.000) AFC North Champions Patriots win the tiebreaker on ‘strength of victory’ – .455 vs .392 #3 – Denver Broncos (.778) AFC West Champions #4 – Indianapolis Colts (.444) AFC South Champions #5 – Pittsburgh Steelers (.600) AFC Wild Card #1 #6 – Buffalo Bills (.556) AFC Wild Card #2 #7 – New York Jets (.556) Bills currently own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Jets #8 – Kansas City Chiefs (.444) #9 – Miami Dolphins (.444) #10 – Oakland Raiders (.444) Because we have two teams from the same division, we need to eliminate one first. The Chiefs have a better record against common opponents than the Raiders (.333 vs .000), so Oakland drop to bottom of the teams with a .444 record. The Chiefs have a better record within the conference than the Dolphins (.600 vs .286). #11 – Houston Texans (.375) #12 – Jacksonville Jaguars (.333) #13 – Baltimore Ravens (.222) #14 – San Diego Chargers (.222) #15 – Tennessee Titans (.222) The tie between the Ravens, Chargers and Titans comes down to their conference record, which respectively is .286, .200, and .000) #16 – Cleveland Browns (.200) Despite being the ‘#16 seed’ in the AFC, they are only three wins behind the second Wild Card slot

NFC

#1 – Carolina Panthers (1.000) NFC South Champions #2 – Arizona Cardinals (.778) NFC West Champions #3 – Minnesota Vikings (.778) NFC North Champions Cardinals have a better conference record than the Vikings (.833 vs .800) #4 – New York Giants (.500) NFC East Champions #5 – Green Bay Packers (.667) NFC Wild Card #1 #6 – Atlanta Falcons (.667) NFC Wild Card #2 Packers have a better conference record than the Falcons (.667 vs .571) #7 – Washington Redskins (.444) #8 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers (.444) #9 – Chicago Bears (.444) #10 – St Louis Rams (.444) #11 – Seattle Seahawks (.444) #12 – Philadelphia Eagles (.444) Because there are teams from the same division involved in this six-way tie, we need to eliminate some teams through divisional tiebreakers first. Washington owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Eagles, and the Rams own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Seahawks, dropping those two teams to seeds #11 and #12. Washington have the best conference record of the four remaining teams with .667, so take the #7 seed. The Bucs have a better conference record than the remaining two teams with .500, so take the #8 seed. As the Bears have faced and beaten the Rams, they then take the #9 seed, and the Rams the #10 seed. Finally, the Seahawks have a better conference record than the Eagles (.500 vs .429), so take the #11 seed over Philly. #13 – New Orleans Saints (.400) #14 – San Francisco 49ers (.333) #15 – Detroit Lions (.222) #16 – Dallas Cowboys (.222) Lions have a better conference record than the Cowboys (.333 vs .250) Despite being the ‘#16 seed’ in the NFC, the Cowboys are still only three wins behind the Giants in the race to the NFC East Crown.
