NFL Playoff Picture: three more teams clinch playoff spots after Sunday

With only three of the twelve playoff spots clinched heading into yesterday's games, and 24 teams still mathematically alive for the playoff


With only three of the twelve playoff spots clinched heading into yesterday’s games, and 24 teams still mathematically alive for the playoffs, there was still plenty to play for. Now that the dust has settled, six of those twenty four teams are now eliminated from playoff contention. At the same time, the number of teams that are definitely in the playoffs have doubled, as the Bengals, Packers and Seahawks all clinch postseason berths. Who’s currently slated to fill the remaining six slots? Check out the full playoff picture below!  

AFC

In the picture

#1 – New England Patriots (.857) CLINCHED AFC East, first round bye #2 – Cincinnati Bengals (.786) CLINCHED playoff spot #3 – Denver Broncos (.714) #4 – Houston Texans (.500) #5 – Kansas City Chiefs (.643) #6 – Pittsburgh Steelers (.643)

In the hunt

#7 – New York Jets (.643) The Chiefs have a better record within the conference (.800) than the Steelers (.600) or the Jets (.600). The Steelers have a better record against common opponents (.750) than the Jets (.500). #8 – Indianapolis Colts (.429) #9 – Jacksonville Jaguars (.357) The Colts and the Jaguars can only make the playoffs by winning the AFC South; they cannot win a wild card spot.

#7 – Atlanta Falcons (.500) #8 – Philadelphia Eagles (.429) #9 – New York Giants (.429) The Eagles own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Giants. The Eagles and the Giants can only make the playoffs by winning the NFC East; they cannot win a wildcard spot.
