NFL Interview Tracker: Who’s being interviewed for open HC spots?

Black Monday has only just started, but already there are five teams looking for new head coaches, and there will no doubt be more than that


Black Monday has only just started, but already there are five teams looking for new head coaches, and there will no doubt be more than that in a few hours time. With so many open spots, however, teams are already beginning to interview for their new head coaches. We’ll be tracking all the news and rumours about coaching interviews throughout the offseason.

New York Giants

The Giants will interview defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo on Thursday, per Albert Breer. They will then interview Bears OC Adam Gase on Friday, according to Ian Rapoport, and Jaguars OL coach Doug Marrone on Saturday. Parting ways with Tom Coughlin, former NFL GM and current ESPN analyst Mark Dominik suggests that the team may hire their offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo as his replacement.

San Francisco 49ers

Per NFL.com, the 49ers will interview Bengals OC Hue Jackson this Sunday. Per NFL.com’s Rand Getlin, the 49ers are interviewing Bills assistant HC Anthony Lynn on Thursday. Albert Breer says that Sean Payton is the 49ers’ top target, but if they don’t land him, they could go for Hue Jackson, the Bengals’ offensive coordinator. According to Adam Schefter, Chip Kelly has reached out to the 49ers about their head coaching vacancy. Another former HC who has reached out to the 49ers is Mike Shanahan, per Ian Rapoport.    

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins will interview Bengals OC Hue Jackson on Sunday. Jaguars assistant HC and OL coach Doug Marrone will be interviewing with the Dolphins on Friday, according to Ian Rapoport. Bills assistant HC Anthony Lynn is interviewing with the Dolphins on Wednesday, per NFL.com’s Rand Getlin. The first interviewee for the Dolphins HC job is former Falcons HC Mike Smith. The Dolphins have requested to interview three coaches from inside their division, per Adam Schefter: Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, Patriots DC Matt Patricia and Bills assistant HC Anthony Lynn. The Dolphins have promoted Chris Grier to general manager, per Jason La Canfora. Mike Tannenbaum will be in charge of football operations. Names not included below who are in the mix for the Dolphins job, per the Miami Herald’s Adam Beasley, include Doug Marrone, Jim Mora Jr., Buccaneers OC Dirk Koetter and former Falcons HC Mike Smith. Per FOX’s Alex Marvez, Miami will interview Mike Shanahan on Tuesday. Adam Gase will interview with the Dolphins on Thursday, per Ian Rapoport. The Dolphins will interview Lions DC Teryl Austin at some point this week, which will satisfy the Rooney Rule. According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, Austin would prefer to interview with Miami before he speaks with the Browns, who he is scheduled to interview with on Tuesday. Team owner Stephen Ross stated in a letter to season ticket holders that interim head coach Dan Campbell will be interviewed for the position full time.  

Detroit Lions

In non-HC news, the Lions requested to interview Cowboys assistant director of player personnel Will Clay for their vacant General Manager position, as per Ian Rapoport. Clay declined the request.  

New Orleans Saints

Ian Rapoport says that the Saints would only require a second round pick to trade away Sean Payton. While the Saints have not, at time of writing, parted ways with Sean Payton, PFT are reporting that if New Orleans were to move on, Doug Marrone would be ‘at the top of their list‘.  

Cleveland Browns

Panthers DC Sean McDermott will interview on Thursday. They will also interview Patriots DC Matt Patricia and Cowboys DB coach Jerome Henderson at some point. The Browns will interview Bengals OC Hue Jackson the day after the Bengals’ first playoff game, according to Ian Rapoport. They will then interview the Bengals DC Paul Guenther the following week. The Browns have officially promoted Sashi Brown to the role of Executive Vice President of Football Operations. The first candidate to interview for Browns HC will be former Buffalo Bills HC and current Jacksonville Jaguars OL coach Doug Marrone, according to ProFootballTalk. The Browns have already spoken with Bears OC Adam Gase on the evening of firing Mike Pettine, per Chris Mortensen. They will interview Teryl Austin, the Lions’ defensive coordinator, on Tuesday, which will meet the Rooney Rule requirement for the team, and then have a formal interview with Gase on Wednesday, per Ian Rapoport.  

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles will interview the Giants OC Ben McAdoo on Thursday, according to Albert Breer. One former HC who is interested in the Eagles position, according to Ian Rapoport, is Mike Shanahan. According to ProFootballTalk, Jeff Lurie’s top two preferences for head coach both currently have jobs, and one of them is a complete surprise: the Saints’ Sean Payton, and the Ravens’ John Harbaugh. Ian Rapoport reports that the Eagles will ‘likely’ interview Teryl Austin, Lions DC, at some point this week. Philadelphia plan to interview their interim HC Pat Shurmur on Monday, and Bears OC Adam Gase on Tuesday. They will also interview The Eagles have already interviewed the team’s running backs coach Duce Staley, thereby satisfying the Rooney Rule.
