NFL fantasy: Week 5 start ‘em sit ‘em tight ends

Every week, new names appear on the tight end leaderboard. Are Tyler Kroft, AJ Derby, or James Hanna worthy to start in Week 5?

To be honest with you, I didn’t know the NFL had so many tight ends. It seems like every week, a completely new list of names occupies the top ten NFL fantasy leaderboard. Are any of them worth starting this week? Here’s what I think.

Start this guy: Hunter Henry, LAC vs New York Giants

Theoretically, this should be an off week for Hunter Henry. He scored a touchdown last week, so he should not be targeted in Week 5, just like he wasn’t targeted in Week 1 or Week 3. But the Chargers are playing the Giants this week. Every tight end gets a touchdown and double-digit fantasy points against New York. Antonio Gates might get one, too. Last week the Giants gave touchdowns to OJ Howard and Cameron Brate. Maybe they’ll be just as charitable this week.

Sit this guy: Jack Doyle, IND vs San Francisco 49ers

Did you know the San Francisco 49ers have given up the fewest NFL fantasy points to tight ends in the league this year? Jack Doyle and the Colts will understand that fact by the end of Week 5.

Start this guy: Jared Cook, OAK vs Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore has one of the top overall defenses in the NFL, but they have one weakness in NFL fantasy defense and that is the tight end. Only the Giants and the Cleveland Browns give up more tight end points than the Ravens. With a backup quarterback and down a quality wide receiver, tight end might be a safe and popular target this week for Oakland.

Sit this guy: Eric Ebron, DET vs Carolina Panthers

Detroit faces one of the best overall defenses and the #5 NFL fantasy D/ST against tight ends when Carolina comes to visit. Ebron has had his typical season so far with a few flashes and then nothing. This will be a week of nothing for the Detroit tight end.

Start this guy: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, NYJ vs Cleveland Browns

Austin Seferian-Jenkins hasn’t lit the NFL on fire in his first two weeks back from suspension, but he is getting targets, and those are the Cleveland Browns lining up on the other side of the ball. One touchdown makes the Jets’ tight end a top play. He’ll get it this week against the Browns.

Sit this guy: David Njoku/Seth Devalve, CLE vs New York Jets

The Jets’ defense is working to get back its swagger. They have allowed one touchdown each of the last two weeks. One position they are particularly adept at covering is the tight end. They are a top-ten NFL fantasy D/ST against the position. Look for that to continue, shutting down half the Browns’ offense.

Week 5 flash-in-the-pan prediction:

Green Bay’s third tight end, Richard Rodgers, catches three passes against the Cowboys Sunday for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Full disclosure: Last week’s picks

Four of six picks made the cut last week. I needed a do-over with Seth Devalve, held to 0.20 points in the devastation of Cleveland by the Bengals last week. This week will be better!
