NFL fantasy: Week 5 start ‘em sit ‘em kickers

Greg Zuerlein scored more NFL fantasy points than any wide receiver or tight end last week. Should we start ‘em in Week 5?

Many NFL fantasy owners don’t put enough thought into what kicker to stream or start. Weather, field conditions, point potential, and track record are all things to consider when picking a kicker. Here are a few kickers who I would start and three I would stay away from in Week 5.

Start this guy: Dan Bailey, DAL vs Green Bay Packers

The Cowboy Stadium scoreboard might have trouble keeping up with the points in this game pitting a star veteran against a star sophomore. The Packer defense will get a couple of stops and the Cowboys will take the field goals. Put Bailey down for two field goals, including one past 50 yards, and four extra points.

Sit this guy: Nick Folk, TB vs New England Patriots

Tampa Bay’s stadium is among the worst to kick in. Last week, both kickers missed extra points and field goals. Even Folk’s game-winner bounced in off the left upright. Don’t trust him.

Start this guy: Matt Prater, DET vs Carolina Panthers

Prater missed his first field goal of the year in Week 4. On the year, he is seven of eight, including four from over 50 yards. Carolina might have its offensive character back. If so, points will be at a premium which could lead to some long field goals.

Sit this guy: Phil Dawson, ARI vs Philadelphia Eagles

Phil Dawson has struggled this season missing both field goals and extra points. Philadelphia is not an easy place to play, especially if you are having issues. Philly gets to Dawson’s head.

Start this guy: Greg Zuerlein, LAR vs Seattle Seahawks

This is another game where points will be flying. Zuerlein accounted for 23 of Arizona’s 35 points last week. The coach will let him kick from about anywhere. His seven field goals last week pushed him into the top position of NFL fantasy kickers. He should build on that lead in Week 5.

Sit this guy: Younghoe Koo, LAC vs New York Giants

Los Angeles’ coaching staff has faith in their rookie kicker, but his rough start will not get any easier in the swirling breezes of the New Jersey Meadowlands. The Giants have come close to blocking a couple of kicks already. Koo will have a tough day Sunday.

Week 5 flash-in-the-pan prediction:

The Browns’ Zane Gonzalez kicks four field goals, but the Jets’ Chandler Catanzaro kicks his fifth as time expires as the tanking Jets accidentally improve to 3-2.

Full disclosure: I could kick myself

Last week, I correctly started Stephen Hauschka who finished as the PK-7 and sat the PK-21, Nick Folk. The other four kickers I picked finished PK11, 12, 13, and 14, but in reverse order of how I picked them. It will be better next week!
