NFL Breaking News: Twitter to stream Thursday Night Football in 2016

Roger Goodell has announced a landmark deal with the social media service Twitter to live stream 10 Thursday Night Football games in 2016.

Roger Goodell has announced a landmark deal with the social media service Twitter to live stream 10 Thursday Night Football games in 2016. The move is a continuation of the NFL’s push into new markets following the streaming of the Jacksonville Jaguars vs Buffalo Bills game from London via Yahoo! last year. Announcing the deal, Goodell said in a statement, “Twitter is where live events unfold and is the right partner for the NFL as we take the latest step in serving fans around the world live NFL football. There is a massive amount of NFL-related conversation happening on Twitter during our games and tapping into that audience, in addition to our viewers on broadcast and cable, will ensure Thursday Night Football is seen on an unprecedented number of platforms this season. This agreement also provides additional reach for those brands advertising with our broadcast partners.” These 10 games will now be available via 3 distinct channels, broadcast TV, cable TV and digital, helping to further widen the distribution network for live NFL football. As an added element, perhaps looking to satisfy the demands from fans for ever deeper engagement, the deal also includes the rights to pre-game ‘Periscope’ broadcasts with players and teams, offering further insight into the NFL universe. This is also a reflection of the changing means of interaction with NFL programming, many fans already utilise social media and instant reactions to events to enhance their viewing experience. as Jack Dorsey, Twitter CEO pointed out, “This is about transforming the fan experience with football. People watch NFL games with Twitter today. Now they’ll be able to watch right on Twitter Thursday nights.”
