Horrible news out of Louisiana this morning as it has been confirmed that former New Orleans Saints DE Will Smith has been shot dead following a 3 car accident in New Orleans Lower Garden district. He was 34 years old. During the altercation his wife, Racquel was also shot twice in the leg but her injuries aren’t thought to be life threatening. A 30 year old man, thought to be the driver of one of the other vehicles involved in the accident is in custody and the weapon has been recovered. Smith’s car, a Mercedes, was hit from behind by a Hummer H2, causing it to collide with a Chevrolet Impala in front of it. The events that followed will surely be expanded upon as the investigation takes place but, as we understand it from early reports, Smith and the driver of the Hummer got involved in an altercation which ended with the Hummer driver shooting Smith dead and wounding his wife. A first round pick for the Saints in 2004 following a stellar career at Ohio State, Will Smith played for the team for 9 seasons, including during their Super Bowl winning season in 2010, and retired from the game in 2014. During his time in New Orleans he led the team in sacks 4 times and was a Pro Bowler in 2006. Well respected as a player, both for his achievements on the field and for his leadership. Smith was a team captain and a unifying presence in the Saints locker room. Upon his retirement, he was the Saints 4th all time pass rusher with 67 sacks over his career, a big total for a player at his position within the 3-4 defense.
