It was is probably the game of the day, the (15) Oregon Ducks will take on the (11) TCU Horned Frogs. The Oregon Ducks were looking to follow up a very good year last year – they lost in the National Championship – by at least making the College Football Playoff again. But those hopes didn’t come to fruition in large part due to QB Vernon Adams’ injury. Nevertheless, a win today would give the Ducks their 5th straight Bowl win. As you’d expect for the Ducks, the offense is one of the best in the country. They rank 4th in total yards per game (548 YPG), 35th in passing yards per game (260.4 PYG), 5th in rushing yards per game (287.8 RYG) and 5th in points per game (43.2 PPG). Defensively, though, they are not as hot. They rank 116th in total yards (480 YPG), 126th in passing (301.2 PYG), 75th in rushing (179.2 RYG) and 114th in scoring (36.8 PPG). Despite that, their top prospect is DE DeForest Buckner. Buckner is a beats, standing at 6’7”, 290lbs he is one of the biggest players in the draft. Despite his huge weight, he carries it very well. He has big, broad shoulders and long arms but none of that weight is excess around his midriff. As you may have guessed, his game is built on power. He can put any o-lineman on his heels with a brutal bull rush and his long arms are big and strong enough to halt any running back trying to sneak by. Though don’t be fooled by his size, he is surprisingly agile and can win with speed around the edge. He fits excellently as a 3-4 DE. WR Bralon Addison (if he declares), OT Tyler Johnstone, QB Vernon Adams Jr., OG Matt Hegarty, LB Christian French, LB Joe Walker, LB Tyson Coleman and DT Alex Balducci are looking to make big impacts in their final game as a Duck. TCU had the same target as the Oregon Ducks: make the College Football Playoff. Unlike the Ducks, though, they were looking to make it for the first time having missed out last year after sharing the Big 12 Championship with the Baylor Bears. They’ll be looking to match last year’s Bowl performance – they beat Ole Miss 42-3 – to win their second straight Bowl game, but they will have to do that without their star QB Trevone Boykin who has been suspended. Again, like the Ducks, it should come as no surprise that their success is on the back of a high powered offense. They rank 3rd in total yards (564 YPG), 8th in passing (345.5 PYG), 24th in rushing (218.8 RYG) and 7th in scoring (41.7 PPG). Defensively, though, they aren’t as bad as the Ducks. They rank 66th in total yards (397 YPG), 52nd in passing (214.3 PYG), 80th in rushing (182.3 RYG) and 59th in scoring (26.1 PPG). Unfortunately for the Horned Frogs, their top prospect, WR Josh Doctson, is out for this game following wrist surgery. So their top prospect to watch is fellow receiver Kolby Listenbee. Listenbee isn’t as much of an all-round threat as Coleman, but he is a hell of a deep threat. At the Big Ten Championships this year he ran a 10.03 second 100-metre dash, that’s lightning. He is such a big play threat. He must show more than just his speed today and at the Senior Bowl to rise up draft boards. OT Halapoulivaati Vaital, RB Aaron Green, C Joey Hunt, SS Derrick Kindred, DE Terrell Lathan, DT Davion Pierson, K Jaden Oberkrom, WR Deante’ Gray, CB Corry OMeally, WR Ja’Juan Story, OG Brady Foltz and OG Jamelle Naff are all looking to go out with a bang for the Horned Frogs.
