In the least shocking news of the spring, Johnny Manziel has today officially been waived by the Browns, ending what has been a tumultuous relationship from day one. Entering the league in the 2014 draft with the 22nd pick of the first round, and the second quarterback off the board, Manziel came into the league poised to have an immediate with a franchise in need of a makeover. With all the promise that ‘Johnny Football’ showed in college, many thought he could be the catalyst that could bring about a renaissance to the Cleveland fans so desperate for a hero. What followed however was a hype train that derailed pretty much immediately after it left the station. Manziel has shown flashes of talent when given the opportunity to play, however for every defender that missed a tackle, there was always a story to follow the next week that would question Manziel’s character. This showed up pretty much immediately into his Cleveland career, when the weekend after the team first organised practice took place, he was pictured partying in Vegas and drinking champagne. While other rookies were learning their playbooks, giving their heart and soul to the teams they were desperate to make it on, Manziel beginning his road to the end of his Cleveland career. His numbers with Cleveland speak for themselves: out of the eight games he started, six were losses, with stats of 7 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. He showed the most promise with his feet rushing for 259 yards and a score, but in two years, this ‘saviour’ underachieved. He had all the opportunity to turn this decline around, and no one could call him out if he was giving it his all, but at the walkthrough before the final game of the 2014 season, Manziel was nowhere to be seen. Manziel’s time in Cleveland is done, but if he isn’t careful his entire career could be over. In October of last year, he was in a roadside accident, admitting to police who attended the scene that he had been drinking. To add to that last month, a complaint was filed that he allegedly hit his girlfriend multiple times in an incident in January. Maturity and the allure of the NFL have played a big role in where Manziel is today, and if he doesn’t fix his off the field issues immediately, His new nickname in NFL circles will be ‘Johnny Unemployable’.
