This time last year Jarryd Hayne was gearing up to try and cross over into the NFL. He managed to defy the odds thanks to some spectacular kick return plays during the pre-season and made the San Francisco 49ers 53-man roster for week one. Hayne managed 23 touches in the regular season, gaining 79 yards in total but fumbling 3 times. Now the former Rugby League star is shooting for another dream – playing in the Olympics: “The Fiji sevens team reached out to me. I could not pass that chance up.” Hayne said; “The Olympics has been something I have admired since I was a little boy, and it is an opportunity I feel similar to me joining the NFL.” With Fijian heritage on his father’s side Hayne qualifies for their national team, and will join up with the Fiji Sevens team at Twickenham next weekend. In a statement released by the 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said: “Jarryd is a tremendous example of what can happen when you commit to a goal and do everything in your power to make it a reality. He earned the right to wear a 49ers uniform and compete alongside the best in the game. We fully support Jarryd’s decision to pursue another dream.”
