Former New York Jets running back Chris Ivory is expected to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars when free agency officially opens at 4pm (ET) today. Ivory, who had his first 1,000 yard rushing season in 2015, is a bull of a runner who will be a good compliment to TJ Yeldon in the Jacksonville backfield. While he does have a long list of previous injury issues – He’s never played a full season – he is a perfect fit for the developing Jaguars offense with his strong north-south running style and reasonable ability as a receiver out of the backfield. Reports place the contract in the range of 5 years & $32.5 million, which may sound a lot but Ivory, who was undrafted in 2010, doesn’t have a lot of carries under his belt compared to other backs of similar experience and the Jaguars have a ton of cap room they need to spend. The guarantee may only be around the $10-$15 million mark, if that is front loaded then it becomes an easy contract to get out of should Ivory not work out. The likelihood is that it will be a good deal in the long run. Ivory, at 27, still has peak years ahead of him and proved himself capable of producing across a full season with the Jets. His 7 rushing touchdowns and 4.3 yards per carry in 2015 were better than Jacksonville managed as a team (5 rushing TD’s and 4.2 yards per carry) so the hope will be he can provide a more consistent rushing attack to take some of the pressure off of Blake Bortles.
