ICYMI: NFL News – July 30th

It's now just a 8 days until the first NFL game of 2016, so news is picking up. Here is what you may have missed.

With the last two teams reporting to training camp today, we can officially say football is back. Furthermore, come next Sunday, we’ll have an NFL game to watch every single Sunday until the first in February. With so much to be excited about, here is what you may have missed.

Injury Updates –

The Dolphins have placed RB Arian Foster, RB Damien Williams, LB Nick Vigil, CB Xavien Howard, and CB Bobby McCain on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

The Bills placed WR Sammy Watkins, DE Shaq Lawson, WR Marcus Easley and DT Kyle Williams on the PUP list, LB Manny Lawson and WR Kolby Listenbee on the Non-Football Injury list and DT Marcell Dareus, DB Jonathan Dowling, OT Seantrel Henderson and RB Karlos Williams on the Non-Football Illness list.

The Cowboys have placed RB Lance Dunbar, DT Maliek Collins, DE Benson Mayowa and TE James Hanna on the PUP list and LB Jaylon Smith, RB Darren McFadden and LB Damien Wilson on the NFI list. In addition, the Cowboys added LB Rolando McClain and DE Randy Gregory on the reserve/did not report list.

Four contracts extended –

The Detroit Lions have extended CB Darius Slay’s contract for 4-years, worth $48 million. He’ll now receive $50.2 million over the next five years, which makes him a top 7 cornerback in terms of their contract.

Eagles RB Darren Sproles got a one year extension having nearly been traded away last year. Though he may not be used a lot on offense, he remains one of the better punt returners in the NFL. The extension is worth $4.5 million.

Having built one of the more promising rosters in the NFL over the last few years, the Raiders have handed GM Reggie McKenzie a 4-year extension to keep him in town through 2021.

The Texans, who have built an equally as impressive roster, also extended their GM’s contract. Rick Smith will now be the Texans GM through 2020.

NFL feeling generous? –

For the second time this week, the NFL has conditionally reinstated a player. This time, it was the Dolphins former 3rd overall pick, DE Dion Jordan. He will have to undergo counselling this preseason and he will be re-evaluated before Week 1. If he meets the NFL’s conditions he will be fully reinstated.

Andre Johnson AFC South tour –

Having visited with the Titans earlier this week, WR Andre Johnson has signed a 2-year deal with the Tennessee Titans. He will give Marcus Mariota another big body and redzone target and he’ll be a valuable veteran presence to the young receivers in the Titans offense.

Ravens woes (P.S. The Steve Smith legend grows) –

The Ravens may have just taken the lead for shortest and strangest free agency deal ever. On Wednesday the Ravens agreed to terms with Jake Long. On Thursday his physical brought up some concerns so he was referred to Dr. James Andrews. Having been eventually cleard by both physicals on Friday, the two sides had a change of heart as the Ravens didn’t want the risk and Jake Long wouldn’t sign an injury-waiver. He is now a free agent.

In addition, Crockett Gillmore, a projected offensive starter, has been referred to have an MRI on his hamstring. Now entering his third year and having struggled to stay healthy, this could be a significant blow to him, especially considering the depth the Ravens have at tight end.

By now everyone should know that a torn Achilles cost Steve Smith what was meant to be his final season. However, he announced that he would in fact be back to play one more year. It has now been revealed that his comeback is even more incredible, as he reportedly suffered a double rupture of his Achilles tendon, something his surgeon had never seen before. He is a truly remarkable man and player.

Aldon Smith taking control –

Aldon Smith has struggled mightily to stay on the field, despite his immense talent, due to substance abuse troubles. Following a video of him surfaced showing him smoking what is presumed to be marijuana, he has checked himself into rehab. Hopefully this is what will finally turn his career around.

Pro Bowl getting more unpopular?! –

The Pro Bowl is already unpopular among the players, with an increasing amount of players opting not to play. Well, its reputation just took another hit as Tyler Eifert, who suffered an ankle injury that could cost him regular season games, has stated that he will never play in the Pro Bowl again. This is a blow as he is one of the leagues rising stars. The Pro Bowl’s days are surely very numbered now.

Rookie contract updates –

With training camps virtually all started, you’d expect all of the rookies to be signed and ready to go, well, one more is. 49ers 1st round pick Josh Garnett has now signed his rookie contract and will be at training camp. Meanwhile, further south in San Diego, 3rd overall pick Joey Bosa has not yet signed and he won’t be at camp until he does so. This is possibly one of the last things that the Chargers would want to happen.

Redskins GM is mad –

Upon hearing that 1st round pick Josh Doctson would be placed on the teams PUP list with an Achilles injury, Redskins GM Scott McCloughan reportedly punched a wall and is now porting a hand wrap. At least we know he cares about his players…

Roy Helu Jr released –

Jack Del Rio announced that the Raiders will be parting ways with RB Roy Helu Jr due to his inability to get healthy and stay on the field.
