It’s Friday 15th of July, and that means it is contract deadline day! All contract agreements have to be submitted and signed by 4PM ES time, or they won’t count. There are still plenty of players with Franchise tags applied, waiting to see if they can get that contract in before they have to play a season under the tug. There have been other events, but this one was always going to be about contracts.
Von Miller is close –
As the deadline rushes closer, the Broncos have thrown contract after contract at Von Miller in an attempt to get the champion of the people to agree a deal for not only himself, but for all players everywhere. The gracious and modest face of the proletariat has been offered $70M in guaranteed funds in the latest tabled offer from the Broncos. Is this enough to sate the will of the people, and get our reluctant hero to agree to the demands of the oppressive overlords? Stay tuned.
Boldin is wanted in N.O –
The Saints have expressed strong interest in signing powerful Wideout Anquan Boldin. The free agent has visited Detroit and Washington so far, and is now being linked with the Saints through their receivers coach – John Morton – who spent two seasons working with Boldin when he was at the 49ers. This could have major impact on the way they play next season, as Boldin will supplement the speed that they already have in their receiver corp with a bullish downfield blocker with a safe pair of hands.
Williams DWI –
Running Back Jonathan Williams hasn’t played a game for the Bills yet, and he’s already setting the bar. Being pulled over on suspicion of driving whilst intoxicated, he was arrested when he failed a sobriety test, and then refused a breathalyser test. His bond of $765 was posted, and he was released on bail. The NFL are investigating under the personal conduct policy.
Jeffery is going to have to wait –
Negotiations have broken down in Chicago, as the Bears and Alshon Jeffery appeared to be miles apart in expectations for contracts. It is highly likely that the WR will be playing the season on the Franchise tag, as the Bears simply aren’t happy to pay him the wages that his agents are demanding. The Bears are expecting him to step up on the field, and prove his worth on the tag, and then open the conversation again at the end of the year.
Tucker wants his money –
The Ravens need to ante up if they want to retain kicker Justin Tucker. The productive foot has been a solid performer for the Ravens this season, and is currently being held under the franchise tag. He has been clear that if they don’t offer him a deal, he isn’t afraid of walking. The Ravens will need to come to the table with a serious offer today, if they seriously intend to keep their kicker whilst he is in their prime. Expect Tucker to be looking for a Gostkowski level payout.
It’s supplementary for a reason –
The supplemental draft has passed by with no bids placed. The third time in four years where nobody was willing to place a bid in exchange for a draft spot in the main draft. Rashaun Simonise, and Ra’Zahn Howard have reportedly already been offered contracts now that they have passed into Free Agency. That leaves four players in the draft as yet unsigned. Eddie D’Antuono, Jalen Overstreet, Tee Sheperd, and Cameron Walton. Expect Overstreet to languish a little, as the credit card fraud charges hang over his career.
