What you might have missed around the NFL

  • Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Dan Skuta was arrested and charged with first-degree misdemeanor battery last week. In a statement the team said: “The Jaguars are aware of the situation involving linebacker Dan Skuta and are currently gathering more information. The team has been in constant communication with Dan through this process in its entirety. No further comment can be made at this time.”
  • The Houston Texans and their first round pick receiver Will Fuller have agreed on a 4 year, $10.2 million contract. Joey Bosa (SD), Joshua Garnett (SF) and Darron Lee (NYJ) are the only unsigned first round picks from this years draft.
  • Sammy Watkins is sounding less confident about being back on the field in time for training camp. After getting a screw put in his foot in May the hope had been he would be back up to speed before training camp started. “You never know. Right now I feel good but I got to go back and train and rehab. Hopefully it feels good when I run and everything like that. I haven’t ran in three or four weeks. Hopefully I’ll feel good about it and I’ll be on the field in training camp.”
  • Despite his statistical output being far from consistent since he left Pittsburgh four years ago new Ravens receiver Mike Wallace feels he is a better player now that he was during his time with the Steelers: “I think I’ve gotten better, even though [the] numbers don’t say so,” Wallace said. “I think I’ll get better this year, and I’ll show some people I have a lot up my sleeve.”
  • Five weeks after once again filing an appeal against his “deflategate” suspension a ruling is expected soon from the 2nd US circuit court of appeals. While football fans across the world want this to go away it is unlikely to actually happen any time soon.
  • Last week the NFL scheduled interviews with four players named in an Al-Jazeera report that linked players to performance enhancing drugs. One of those players, James Harrison, took to his instagram account to rant at Roger Goodell and the NFL for requesting interviews during training camp about a now recanted report and without any further evidence being presented.
  • Philadelphia Eagles #2 pick in the last draft, quarterback Carson Wentz, may end up being a healthy scratch on game days according to local reports as veterans Sam Bradford and Chase Daniels lock him out of the 45-man roster.

I also have 10 years playing and coaching experience in American football, starting at the University of Nottingham and including a stint as defensive coordinator at Oxford Brookes University. I may be a Patriots fan but all aspects of the sport interest me, from guard play to special teams.
