We could all tell the moment it happened in the game last week that Duron Carter was looking at a suspension. But it definitely wasn’t a cut and dry situation, there were many factors that led up to the play and the league’s ultimate decision.
On June 30, 2016, Kevin Glenn found Duron Carter for a highlight reel touchdown grab. This should have been the end of the play but in an emotional moment the star receiver was fired up as he walked by the Ottawa bench. He appeared to be in heated verbal exchange with the Ottawa bench. He then appeared to bump into and knock down Ottawa coach Rick Campbell, which started a big melee on the sidelines that resulted in over 60 yards in penalties in one play. Duron Carter would not be the only one to face discipline in this situation.
Duron Carter has been assessed a one game suspension for: “actions that violated the standards of acceptable conduct in the CFL.”
Ottawa Redblacks safety Jermaine Robinson has been fined for the high hit he delivered to Carter on the play.
Redblacks defensive end Jerell Gavins, who was also ejected on the play, has also received a fine for punching an opponent and for making inappropriate gestures at fans.
The Redblacks head coach, Rick Campbell, has also been fined in the incident as after a review by the league it was determined that the coach did not do enough to avoid contact with the player.
*Monetary terms of the fines were not made public*
This incident is a bit of a black eye on the league early on in their season and in my opinion, much more could have been done in the heat of the moment to ensure this embarrassing situation for the league didn’t happen. No one person is truly to blame for this, Duron Carter could have been a little less hot-headed on the sideline while Ottawa coach Rick Campbell went down mighty easy, and the rest of the fines come from the retaliation of the Ottawa players.
All in all, hopefully all involved learn their lesson and pay their fines so that the league can avoid similar dust-ups in the future. Incidents like this don’t do anybody any good at all.
