The Bills offence last year was an enigma at the best of times, and unfortunately this held Clay back through most of the year, with his lowest totals posted across the board since he became a full time starter three years ago. With that being said, Clay is a candidate for his breakout year this year for a variety of reasons, and with show the Bills they were right to wrestle him away from the Dolphins.
The Bills should improve across the board next year, with Clay being a key figure in an offence ready to take the next step. Tyrod Taylor showed flashes last year of working as an NFL starter and Clay will benefit from another year in this offence as a safety blanket for the Quarterback. Another reason he can breakout is because he is a year into his contract and therefore has had his time to settle in, he was brought in to make an immediate impact, however when learning a new offence, progress can be slow. In a division dominated by the Patriots for nearly a decade, the AFC East just waiting for someone to explode into relevance.
Clay took three years to really show his worth in Miami, but when he did leave, many were unhappy as they felt they had a player on the cusp of greatness, Buffalo have that same player, just ready to take to the field. The biggest positive about Clay is his dynamism, he isn’t just a Tight End, having arrived in the league as a Fullback, he can block like a full back, catch like a receiver and run like a three down back, and all of this can make him a star with the Bills. His best season with the Dolphins will pale in comparison to what he is capable of this year.
