The Dolphins have always been known for their formidable defence, however last year they were somewhat toothless. To remedy that they brought in Vance Joseph, a hugely successful DBs coach who will now run the defence. With such a poor performance last year, this article could have focused a number of players such as Kiko Alonso, Mario Williams or Bobby McCain, however with the presence of Vance Joseph, my favourite player for a breakout is Byron Maxwell.
Maxwell arrives as the best cornerback on the roster, something that he struggled with in Philadelphia, however the difference here is that his defensive coordinator is an expert DBs coach. He showed talent as part of a team when with Seattle and that earned him a big contract, which unfortunately may have also been the reason his career ran into trouble. Coming to the Dolphins he is in a better situation, with a better supporting cast in front of him, and an all-star safety watching his back. He is above average size for his position and brings the hammer when he hits, he also possesses long arms to wrap up receivers.
The Dolphins Cornerback situation is somewhat of a mess, and trading for Maxwell was a clear statement of intent. He has all the tools available to him to really make an impact this year, the only person to stop his development will be if he really can’t handle the spotlight. Byron Maxwell made his name as part of the Legion of Boom, arguably the greatest secondary for a long time. He has huge amounts of talent and potential.
With the added support needed, Maxwell is primed to show the NFL why the Eagles paid to get him in the first place, and why the Dolphins made the right decision trading for him.
