Once upon a time Zach Mettenberger was the future in Tennessee. That time quickly ended when it became clear he wasn’t capable of much at all. Taken in the 6th round of the 2014 draft Mettenberger got 6 starts in his rookie year and completely flopped. The Titans went 0-6 with him under center. He completed fewer than 60% of his passes and threw 8 touchdowns to 7 interceptions. Last year when the Titans drafted Marcus Mariota at #2 Mettenberger was relegated to the back-up spot, but he was called on 7 times last year including 4 starts where he managed to go winless again. After that performance the Titans obviously thought he couldn’t be used again and signed Matt Cassel in March, making Mettenberger’s days numbered. Today they ended his time in Tennessee by waiving the young quarterback. I doubt anyone is going to claim Mettenberger off of waivers but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of his NFL career. Teams need arms during training camps and someone may be willing to take a chance on him.
