After speculation throughout the entire season that Chuck Pagano will be done in Indianapolis as soon as the final whistle blows on Week 17. Instead, after a day full of anticipation for the announcement, the Colts have decided to bring Pagano back. The news was announced at a press conference on Monday afternoon following a lackluster 8-8 season. After taking the Colts to the playoffs every season until this one – and never having a losing season during his time with the team – multiple Indy players were incredibly vocal in their support for their coach. Pagano, whose contract had expired, was offered a one-year extension before the start of this season, which he turned down. Despite missing the playoffs, however, the team have decided to bring Pagano back, a decision that will no doubt be welcomed by his players. Pagano, who joined the team from the Baltimore Ravens where he had been defensive coordinator, has a 41-23 record in the regular season with the Colts, and a 3-3 record in the postseason. Pagano’s tenure as HC was famously derailed when he missed 12 games of the 2012 season when he was diagnosed with leukemia; Pagano recovered from the disease in time to rejoin the team for the postseason. Pagano’s contract extension will tie him to the Colts through the 2019 season. At the same time, owner Jim Irsay announced that general manager Ryan Grigson will be staying with the team, despite reports of a growing rift between Grigson and Pagano. The two will have to continue to work together, however, with Irsay emphasising the need for “continuity”, and describing the HC and the GM as being “linked”. In all, it looks like the management team that have made the Colts one of the winningest teams of the past few years are staying together for the next few years too.
