As strange as it seems the Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t overburdened with talent at the moment. Their starting line-up is one of the best in the league but behind it there isn’t a lot going on. But still, just like everyone else the Steelers will have to cut their roster down to 53 before the season starts. Which current Steelers could find themselves on the outside looking in when the cuts come?
Arthur Moats, OLB
With Bud Dupree, Jarvis Jones and now 6th round pick Travis Freeney on the roster there is a lot of young talent at the outside linebacker position – as well as veteran James Harrison. Cutting Moats would save the Steelers $2 million and even though he signed a 3 year extension in March last season he didn’t do a whole lot to make himself undroppable last season.
Shaun Suisham, K
This is not really as a result on the draft or free agency additions, but it is a move the Steelers will have to make. Suisham missed all of this 2015 season due to a torn ACL and while the Steelers had some trouble replacing him they eventually landed on Chris Boswell, who kicked 4 field goals in their Wild Card win over Cincinnati and was generally very effective. No team is going to carry 2 kickers on their roster, and with a $3.5 million cap hit in 2016 that can be slashed in half should he leave, Shaun Suisham is the obvious candidate for the chop.
Ross Ventrone, SS
Ventrone has been in and around the Pittsburgh Steelers for 3 years now, bouncing between the practice squad and the 53-man roster as injuries and need required. With the Steelers drafting Sean Davis in the second round this year Ventrone has become very expendable, even with Will Allen leaving in the off-season.
