Arizona are one of the favourites to take home Super Bowl 51 next year. Their offense can pull apart any defense on their day. They added Chandler Jones to an already scary front seven and Tyrann Mathieu should be back for the new season. They do have some roster constraints though. The Cardinals are $14 million over the cap at the moment, so just how do they get themselves under the cap in time?
Calais Campbell, DE
Hold on hold on. This isn’t a cut they should make. Campbell is excellent, but he’s in the last year of his contract and is set to make $15 million this season. The Cardinals should be working on an extension with him as we speak and that will give them a lot of help by dropping his 2016 cap number down towards his dead hit of $5 million. That would solve the majority of their problems straight off the bat. Of course if they can’t get an agreement in place then the may have to move on from Campbell a year early in order to get themselves under the cap without slashing depth from key positions.
Jermaine Gresham, TE
Gresham provided very little value to the Cardinals in this first year with them in 2015. 18 catches? That can be replaced with almost anyone and given the fact that Troy Niklas and Darren Fells actually have some potential the Cardinals should move on from Gresham as soon as possible, the $2.4 million they can save would help a great deal.
Frostee Rucker, DT
With the Cardinals using their first round pick on the “talented but troubled” Robert Nkemdiche and having big bodies like Red Bryant and Corey Peters on the roster Frostee Rucker becomes very expendable. Saving $1.3 million is more useful to the Cardinals than the 20 tackles and 3 sacks Rucker gave them last season.
