NBA RUMOR ROUND UP: THURSDAY 30TH JUNE

The latest rumors from around the league!

  • The Toronto Raptors have reportedly made a move for Nerlens Noel of the Philadelphia 76ers. With Jonas Valanciunas locked in firmly as the starting centre, Noel would presumably take over from Bismack Biyombo (widely assumed to leave after opting out) as the Lithuanian’s backup.
  • Unrestricted free-agent Kent Bazemore is an attractive option at the small forward position for many teams, with the New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks and Memphis Grizzlies all in the running for his signature. Although some may be priced out of the market, Bazemore arguably deserves a bump in pay as a result of solid play on both ends of the floor last season for the Atlanta Hawks.
  • The search for a big man continues in Portland as they are believed to be willing to consider a move for Dwight Howard. The eight-time All-Star and three-time Defensive Player of the Year hasn’t quite reached the heights he set at Orlando and will be open to a fresh start after a ineffective stretch at the Houston Rockets. The Trail Blazers are in the hunt for a high profile centre to add another dimension to their gifted backcourt in Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. Howard’s experience as a veteran could also propel this promising team take the next step after a respectable playoff run.
  • Mike Conley is undeniably one of the top free agents of the 2016 class, with suitors surely lining up to secure his signature. The Rockets, Lakers, Nets and Pelicans have all allegedly expressed interest in the point guard, which only adds to the competition with the Spurs and Mavericks also said to be sniffing around. Conley would certainly change the fortunes of most teams in the NBA, particularly because of the huge focus put upon the role of the PG in the modern game.
  • ESPN’s Chris Broussard has revealed that the Rockets, Grizzlies, and Knicks are potentially interested in two-guard Eric Gordon. The 27 year old has proved to be a capable scorer in his seven years as an NBA player, but does hold the tag of being very injury-prone, having not played more than 65 games since his debut season. If he can stay fit, Gordon could be an intriguing fit for many teams considering his ability to score and hit the three consistently.
  • Multiple sources have told news outlets that the Oklahoma City Thunder are attempting to clear cap space in order to chase Al Horford. The Thunder are actively searching for a power forward after Serge Ibaka being traded to Orlando. Billy Donovan does also have a close relationship with the Dominican that goes back to when they were together at the University of Florida. Averaging 15.2 points and 7.3 rebounds last season for the Hawks, Horford could slot in nicely within the Thunder setup, having the capability to score efficiently, hit treys while also passing intelligently for a big man.
  • ESPN broke the news that the Dallas Mavericks have been granted the first meeting with Hassan Whiteside. After striking out during recent seasons in free agency, Mark Cuban is looking to make a statement with a big signing and the fact that he’s apparently willing to offer Hassan the max only backs this statement up further. After the DeAndre Jordan catastrophe of the last offseason, Cuban knows that an able big man will transform Dallas’ chances in a stacked Western Conference. His ability to protect the rim so decisively while providing a double-double on a nightly basis makes him an invaluable piece that he can’t pass up.
