The Cleveland Cavaliers head coach has had an up and down 2016 so far. He recently celebrated his first NBA championship victory as a head coach in the NBA. To be able to do this in his first year as a head coach is remarkable to say the least. The Cavaliers organization has decided to handsomely reward coach Lue and his efforts this year with a five-year, $35 million dollar contract extension. Lue is well deserving and this honestly has been a long time coming.
Lue began his coaching career during the 2011-12 season as an assistant coach under coach Doc Rivers for the Boston Celtics. He was with the Boston Celtics organization for the 2011-12 season and the 2012-13 season. He gained some very valuable experience during his time with the Celtics organization. Once Doc Rivers made the move to Los Angeles to coach the LA Clippers, coach Lue ended up following suit and was an assistant coach for the Clippers for the 2013-14 season.
His life changed as he knew it and eventually was the set up for his NBA head coaching debut. He started out as an associate head coach under coach David Blatt prior to the 2014-15 season. Lue knew he was coming into a fortunate situation because LeBron James decided to return to his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers prior to the 2014-15 season, after spending the past four seasons as a member of the Miami Heat organization. They knew the season would be a rocky road because they were a young team, but coach Lue turned into someone LeBron James could confide in and trust.
During the 2015-16 season the Cleveland Cavaliers started off with a 30-11 record and were in first place in the NBA’s Eastern Conference when the unthinkable happened. Coach David Blatt was abruptly relieved of his head coaching duties and coach Lue was promoted to head coach. Coach Lue was sad for Blatt but was appreciative and grateful for the opportunity. He definitely turned the team around both on the court and off the court. The Cavs became a more cohesive unit and made an improbable run to their first NBA Championship in franchise history. Now coach Lue has proved the haters and doubters wrong and been rewarded.
This is a great thing because the Cavs clearly have something special and they recognize that. They have their leader in place in coach Lue. Someone who understands his player personnel and understands the overall nuances of the game of basketball. After winning the ring this year, the Cavs only have to look to make small improvements and stay above the curve. Coach Lue’s squad will be ready to roll come training camp. Congrats are again in order for Coach Lue!
