On April 21, 2017, former PXC contender Gina “Conviction” Iniong made noise in her One Championship debut against Natalie Gonzales-Hills, winning via unanimous decision in dominating fashion.
It was her first fight after being away from the sport in almost a year and four months. Entering One Championship was a breath of fresh air for Iniong and she admits that she wanted the challenge to face the premier names in the organization.
“I was waiting for a fight in PXC but they did not give me one. I decided to ask Coach Mark (Sangiao) if I can. I entered One Championship especially because I wanted to challenge someone there. I waited for my contract in PXC to lapse and there is no problem,” said Iniong in Tagalog.
When asked which specific fighter she wants to challenge, Iniong immediately stated that she wants to challenge One Strawweight Champion, Angela Lee.
“To be honest it is Angela Lee (who I want to fight) but I am not belittling her and we all know how famous and good she is but I want to test myself in challenging the champion.”
Lee is slated to fight another undefeated fighter in Izabel Nunez on May 26 in Singapore; rumor has it that Iniong has will get her chance soon, since both fighters have fought and won against Mei Yamaguchi.
Iniong won the fight against Yamaguchi back in March 2014 via split decision, while Lee won the inaugural One Championship women’s strawweight title with the same opponent last May in 2016. A fight between Lee and Iniong should be appearing sooner rather than later, which would create a very interesting matchup.
Iniong spoke about a few things that she could focus on for this impending matchup, as well as how she can win the fight against Lee. She also realizes there are a few ways in which her opponent can take advantage of her if a fight card is created in the near future.
“If we are going to talk about striking, I am confident that I am better compared to her but I don’t underestimate her since she is really good on the ground; we all know that is one of my weaknesses, but my ground is continuously improving.”
For now, Iniong will be closely watching Lee’s outcome in Singapore against Nunez, and biding her time, anxiously awaiting the chance to hopefully start training for a fight against the current champion.
