Canelo vs Golovkin: Predictions from the stars of the boxing world

With Saturday's highly anticipated 'Supremacy' fight just days away, we look at some of the predictions from champions past and present.

Gennady Golovkin KO? Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on points? Golovkin to be first to the jab? Canelo’s defence to be too slick? Everyone has their opinion on Saturday’s fight. As we count down the minutes until what many are calling the ‘Fight of the Decade,’ we listen to what some of the biggest names have to say about the super fight.

Thomas Hearns

“(Canelo-Golovkin) is a fight that people will talk about for a long time, people have been waiting a long time for something and I too, I cannot wait any longer. People come to see a show, so if you give them a good show, they will remember it for a long time, and people want to see them fight. GGG is a strong fighter, can fight with anyone, but does not get away from blows and if Canelo does what he has to do – boxing and staying out of danger – when he let’s go of his punches, he has a good chance of winning.”

Anthony Joshua

“I hope Canelo wins, not that I don’t like Triple G. I have just been riding with Canelo for a long time. He’s 27 and the man has achieved so much and he’ll be one of the fathers. He’s still a baby but he’ll be one of the fathers in the sport, give him another 10 years. He’ll be around for a long time and I think he’ll do great things for the sport. So I have been riding with Canelo for a long time but it’s going to be a tough fight because Triple G is from Kazakhstan, he has the good foundations of a boxer. But so has Canelo, so I’ll put my money on him.”

Freddie Roach

“I like Triple G in the fight, but he might be suffering a little bit. He didn’t look great in his last fight but that was the first time he was fighting a slick boxer. Canelo looks to be getting better with every fight and I’m just hoping for a good fight, it’s very interesting and I can’t wait.”

Sergey Kovalev

“I believe that Gennady can get the victory over Canelo. This fight is great because these guys are both very dangerous and very talented. One older and one younger.”

Floyd Mayweather Snr.

“I gotta be honest man I think Canelo can do it, IF he fights the right fight. If Canelo goes to the body, he can stop Triple G. I’m not saying Triple G is weak to the body, but if he goes down there it’s stuff he’s never seen before. It happens that way.”

Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“Canelo will beat Triple G. If I’m not mistaken he just got out-boxed by a welterweight (Kell Brook). It was an even fight. I know boxing, nobody in the world knows boxing like I do. You name them, I cooked them. Canelo knocks Triple G out!”

Bernard Hopkins

“I think there’s going to be some knockdowns but I don’t think there will be a knockout, from either side. It will be a long hard fought fight and if there is any way that it will be stopped it will be based on the referee’s decision. One guy is strictly a knockout puncher, we know who that is, then we have a guy who can punch too, but he has a few more tricks up his sleeve. Triple G will have to work out, how do you figure out a puzzle that isn’t one that you are used to seeing.”

Timothy Bradley

“I think both guys have a chance of winning the fight. I think Canelo is the better boxer but will have to deal with the modern day ‘hands of stone.’ It’s a real pick em’ fight I just don’t know!”

Amir Khan

“I honestly think he beats Triple G. A lot of people underestimate him, I don’t know why. I’ve been in the ring with Canelo. I’ve never been in the ring with Triple G, but I’ve been in the ring with Canelo and he’s hard to hit. He’s quite tricky and, like I said, he hits very hard so you have to give him that respect. I think that he gives a lot of people problems.”

“Sugar” Ray Leonard

“I give the edge to GGG because of who he is and what he has. But I love Canelo, too. That’s going to be a great fight. It’s one of those where you’ve just got to flip a coin.”
