Breaking: Anthony Crolla vs Ricky Burns announced for October

Matchroom have announced an Anglo-Scottish dust-up, at the Manchester Arena on October 7.

Two former lightweight world champions will face off at Manchester Arena on October 7, in a fight which could signal the end of their career for the loser.

Both coming off the back of comprehensive world title losses (Crolla losing back-to-back fights with Linares, and Burns losing to Indongo), this fight signals the last push for either boxer to reclaim their place on the world stage.

At 34 years-of-age, Ricky Burns is the older man by four years, and with 48 professional fights will be aware of the damage a loss to Crolla would do to his rollercoaster career. Despite being the only Scottish fighter ever to win world titles in three different weight classes, ‘Rickster’ is still looking for one more defining night, and with Crolla reaching the latter stages of his career it’s a fight the Scot is confident he can win.

Before the fight was announced Burns showed his appetite for the clash in an interview with Sky Sports, understanding the scale of the fight in the UK.

“There has been talk about this fight before. I think this is a fight that the fans have been asking for as well because it was meant to have happened for a while. The two of us, people know what they are going to get. Two quiet guys that just get on with things, but the two of us like a fight. Manchester or Glasgow, I’m happy, and the fans are in for a good night if it does happen.”

After winning the WBA lightweight championship against Darleys Perez in 2015, Crolla’s fairytale career has taken many more twists and turns. After a destructive defence against Ismael Barroso with a seventh round body shot, the Mancunian came unstuck in his next two outings against Jorge Linares.

Admittedly being outclassed on both occasions in Manchester, ‘Million Dolla’ Crolla is looking to re-build in his final bid for world glory, with Linares moving on to fight another Brit, in the shape of Luke Campbell.

With both of these fighters at a cross-roads in their career, it’s perfect timing for a in-stable clash to determine who is best set to challenge for world honours again.
