Former NBA center Andrew Bogut once said, "I've had two unlucky injuries that are the equivalent of walking under 1,000 ladders and seeing 1,000 black cats," and the Seattle Mariners feel his pain because they are, in fact, the unluckiest team in baseball. FiveThirtyEight actually did a study that proves it, particularly during the team's current playoff drought. Seattle has not made the postseason since 2001, a year in which they set a record with 116 regular season wins only to lose the ALCS in five games to the New York Yankees.
The reasons why Seattle has missed the postseason since then vary. Everything has gone wrong for this team from the AL West being highly competitive to marquee free agent signees not panning out to the roster being decimated by injuries. That was the case for the Mariners last year as they went 78-84 and finished third in the division, but things could be looking up for the franchise. GM Jerry Dipoto made some important moves this offseason that could prove quite helpful to Seattle's future.
There's just one problem. The injury bug showed up at Spring Training, and the uphill battle the Mariners already faced in 2018 just became more difficult. That said, will this be the year when the team finally fights through the bad luck?
