It was all New York all night on Tuesday. The Yankees opened the scoring with three in the first, beginning with a long two-run home run by Gary Sanchez. He homered again in the ninth, finishing the day 3-6 and driving in four.
Detroit’s starter Matthew Boyd lasted just 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits and walking three. Masahiro Tanaka went seven strong for New York, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out four. Two of those three runs came on a home run by Nick Castellanos in the seventh. Castellanos would drive in the Tigers’ fourth run on an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the ninth.
Game 2 Starters – Luis Severino (RHP) vs Jordan Zimmermann (RHP)
Severino has a 3.18 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 2017 and leads the Yankees in just about every pitching category you can think of. His 10.50 K/9 is good for top five in the AL. In his last three games, he has pitched a combined 17.1 innings, allowing nine earned runs on 14 hits, although eight of those runs came in a single start against Boston. He has faced the Tigers once this season, giving up one earned run on four hits in five innings, striking out eight.
Zimmermann comes into Wednesday with a less than impressive 5.87 ERA and 1.52 WHIP on the season, paired with a 6.07 K/9, which is the second-lowest rate of his career. In his last three starts, the right-hander has pitched 15.2 innings, allowing 17 earned runs on 23 hits and striking out just eight while walking six. He has faced the Yankees once so far this season, a game in which he pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, giving up six hits and walking none. It was his only start in which he allowed zero runs this season.

Who’s hot, and who’s not
Didi Gregorius has maintained a .346 batting average in 20 games in August. It is the highest of any Yankee hitter in the month. In his last six games, he has gone 8-24 with three doubles. Gary Sanchez’s OPS in his last 19 games is 1.114, and he has four home runs and 10 RBIs in his last six games. Also worth noting is that Aaron Judge finally snapped his streak of consecutive games with at least one strikeout at 37. He went 1-1 last night with three walks before getting pulled for Jacoby Ellsbury.
Aaron Hicks has three hits in his last 25 at-bats, which translates to a .120 average. He has also struck out eight times in his last 28 plate appearances, which is nearly a third of the time. Brett Gardner is hitting .222 in August and his OBP has fallen below .300 for the month. The outfielder who has seen a surge in power this season has just one home runs in his last 20 games.
Miguel Cabrera has been hot over the past week with seven hits in his last 17 at-bats including three doubles He is hitting .412 in his last five games. Nick Castellanos has been fantastic as of late also, with two home runs and two doubles in his last four games. Justin Upton has a 1.066 OPS in August with nine home runs and 23 RBIs.
Jose Iglesias has eight hits in his last 50 at-bats. His OPS during this span is an abysmal .472. Victor Martinez is hitting just .213 in his last 17 games, with four runs and only three RBIs.
Prediction: Yankees 6 – 2 Tigers
New York is throwing their ace out on the mound in Luis Severino, while the Tigers will put one of their worst starters out there on Wednesday, even if he has pitched well against them in the past. After what the Yankees lineup did to Boyd last night, I wouldn’t be surprised if they put up over six runs, but I’m trying to be conservative.
