Los Angeles Dodgers vs Pittsburgh Pirates Lineups, preview, predictions & channel info (August 23, 2017)

Los Angeles has taken the first two games this series. If Pittsburgh has any hope of a split, they'll have to win tonight.

The Dodgers took last night’s game 8-5.

They jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the first on a groundout by Justin Turner, and adding three in the second on RBI singles by pitcher Brock Stewart and outfielder Chris Taylor. Pittsburgh answered back in the bottom of the third with five runs of their own thanks to a Starling Marte homer, a Josh Harrison double, and John Jaso’s RBI groundout. Stewart failed to record a single out in the inning and was pulled after allowing five runs on four hits and walking four.

With the Dodgers bullpen taking over down 5-4, the offence struck back in the fourth when Taylor drove in a run on an infield single, tying the game at 5-5. In the sixth Corey Seager drove in the go-ahead run on a single to right before the Dodgers’ bullpen combined for seven innings of three hit ball, striking out nine and walking just two.

Game 2 Starters – Rich Hill (LHP) vs Trevor Williams (RHP)

In his first full season with the Dodgers, Hill has posted a 3.54 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 94 innings pitched. He is also posting a 10.72 K/9. In his last three starts, the lefty has pitched a combined 16 innings, allowing eight runs on 17 hits while striking out 22. This will be his first start against the Pirates this season.

Williams comes into this week with a 4.71 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 114.2 innings. This season is his first full season in the majors, and his first time eclipsing the 100 innings pitched mark. In four games in August, the right-hander has allowed 13 earned runs in 21.1 innings, striking out 21. He has faced the Dodgers once earlier this season, going three innings while giving up eight runs, six of those earned.

Who’s hot, and who’s not

Chris Taylor is 8-21 in his last five games, including three doubles and five RBIs. He has struck out only twice in his last 23 plate appearances and is slugging .600 in August. Corey Seager is batting .325 on the month, though he has just one home run in 19 games. 22 of his 26 hits have been singles. Yasmani Grandal and Curtis Granderson both have two home runs in their last four games.

Adrian Gonzalez is 4-21 in his last five games with five strikeouts. Justin Turner has just five hits in his last 25 at bats, all of them singles, although he hasn’t struck out a single time during this span.

Adam Frazier is hitting .318 on the month with a .849 OPS. He is eight for his last 24 with a double, a home run and five RBIs. Josh Harrison is 11-30 in his last seven games with three home runs and 8 RBIs. That gives him a 1.154 OPS over the course of the last week. Starling Marte is 12-32 in the same span, with two home runs and nine runs scored.

David Freese has nine strikeouts and only four hits in his last 23 plate appearances. He has posted a .694 OPS in August so far. Jordy Mercer has a .183 batting average on the month with 17 strikeouts in 75 plate appearances. Of Pirates players with at least 50 at-bats in August, he has the fewest hits and the third most strikeouts.

Prediction: Dodgers 5 – 3 Pirates

The Pirates gave the Dodgers a run for their money last night, but all of their runs came off of LA’s starting pitcher Stewart, who was struggling Tuesday. The Los Angeles bullpen showed that they can come in and shut down the opposition when needed and that confidence paired with a strong starter in Hill means the Dodgers should easily be able to hold off Pittsburgh’s lineup tonight.
