The Pirates won Wednesday’s game 1-0 in 10 innings.
The big story in this game was Rich Hill, who took a perfect game into the ninth, and then a no-hitter into the tenth late last night. The Dodgers starter was dominant, dealing nine straight shutout frames on less than 100 pitches, in spite of racking up 10 strikeouts. Not a single Pirates runner reached base until the bottom of the ninth when a fielding error by Logan Forsythe broke up Hill’s perfection.
In spite of the historic performance by their starter, the Dodgers lineup couldn’t get anything going last night. As a team, they went 0-9 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base. Second baseman Josh Harrison proved to be the hero for Pittsburgh by leading off the tenth inning with a solo game-winning shot that just cleared the left-field wall.
Game 4 Starters – Hyun-jin Ryu (LHP) vs Chad Kuhl (RHP)
Ryu is sporting a 3.45 ERA and 1.31 WHIP so far in 2017, while K/BB sit at 3.06. In three starts in August the southpaw has pitched 17 innings allowing just three earned runs and one home run while striking out 17. He has yet to pitch against Pittsburgh this year.
Kuhl comes into Thursday with a 4.52 ERA on the season with a 1.41 WHIP and 7.76 K/9. In his last three starts in August, the right-hander has allowed eight earned runs in 16 innings pitched, striking out 18. Today will be the first time he has faced the Dodgers all season.

Who’s hot, and who’s not
Chris Taylor is batting .409 in his last six games going 9-22 with three doubles and five RBIs. He also has a 1.025 OPS in the same span. Yasmani Grandal has four hits in his last four games, but all of them have been for extra bases with two doubles and two home runs. The catcher seems to be in a groove in terms of power, slugging .706 during that same span.
Justin Turner has just four hits in his last 21 at-bats, although he has not struck out in his last five games. All four hits have been singles. Adrian Gonzalez is 5-26 in his last six games and has more strikeouts than hits with six.
Josh Harrison is hitting .367 in his last seven games with three doubles, four home runs, and eight RBIs. He has an OPS of 1.233 during this span. Josh Bell is hitting .354 in August with a .998 OPS. He has seven extra bases hits in 21 games, which adds up to 36 total bases, the second most on the team this month. He leads the club in RBIs in August with 17.
Chris Stewart is 6-36 in his last 12 games, which comes out to a .167 batting average. All six of his hits this month have been singles, and he has zero RBIs and an abysmal .333 OPS during this span. David Freese has three hits and seven strikeouts in his last 22 plate appearances.
Prediction: Dodgers 8 – 3 Pirates
I think the Dodgers will be motivated after last night’s crushing loss. Wednesday was just the sixth time LA has been shutout this season, and the first time since June 26. Look for their lineup to bounce back in a big way, especially with the Pirates Chad Kuhl on the mound who has a .858 OPS against versus lefties this year, of which the Dodgers have five in their lineup.
