Los Angeles won last night’s game 6-5 in 12 innings.
Down 3-0 to the Pirates thanks partially to back-to-back home runs by Jose Osuna and Sean Rodriguez, the Dodgers put up a five-spot, the Dodgers scored five in the top of the seventh inning. Four of the five runs came off the bat of newly acquired outfielder Curtis Granderson, who hit a grand slam off starter Gerrit Cole.
Pittsburgh answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth, tying the game 5-5. The teams’ bullpens then duelled it out over the next four innings. The go-ahead run for LA came off the bat of Yasiel Puig, who hit a solo home run in the top of the 12th before Ross Stripling secured the save.
Game 2 Starters – Brock Stewart (RHP) vs Jameson Taillon (RHP)
In limited work this year Stewart has been stellar for Los Angeles. The right-hander has a 1.64 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 22 innings of work this season. Used primarily as a reliever for most of 2017, Stewart has only made two starts, one this month and one in July. In those two games, he pitched nine innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out three. He is yet to pitch against the Pirates.
Taillon has been decent for Pittsburgh this season, posting a 4.64 ERA and 1.51 WHIP so far in 97 innings pitched. In his last three starts, he has combined for 17.1 innings allowing eight runs on 18 hits and striking out 22. The righty has yet to face the Dodgers so far this season.

Who’s hot, and who’s not
Corey Seager, Justin Turner, Chris Taylor, and Cody Bellinger have all reached the ten RBI mark in August. The four players have combined for 18 home runs this month while Seager leads the pack in average for the month with .320. Logan Forsythe has hit well in his last six games, batting .313 with an OPS of .900.
In four games since returning from the DL Adrian Gonzalez is hitting .176 with an OBP of .211. He has struck out four times in 19 plate appearances. Yasmani Grandal has 15 strikeouts in 50 plate appearances in August and is hitting .186, although six of his eight hits in the month have been for extra bases. He is 2-17 in his last five games.
Josh Bell continues to rake. He has a 1.022 OPS in his last 18 games and a 1.091 OPS in his last seven. During this most recent seven-game span Bell has a double, triple, and home run. Starling Marte has been incredible as of late. The outfielder is hitting .419 over the course of the last week with 13 hits in 31 at-bats. He snapped a six-game multi-hit streak last night.
David Freese has just four hits and ten strikeouts in his last 27 plate appearances. The third baseman is hitting .246 in August. Shortstop Jordy Mercer is having a rough month, batting .176 in 18 games with 15 strikeouts and just four RBIs.
Prediction: Dodgers 6 – 4 Pirates
I think tonight’s game will be a close one like last night’s. The Pirates will send out a known quantity in Taillon, and even though Stewart has been good for the Dodgers in limited work, there is just no telling how he’ll continue to perform in the role of starter. I don’t expect him to pitch deep into the game, so most of the load will fall on LA’s bullpen, which worked hard in last night’s extra-innings effort. I have to give it to the Dodgers and their high-powered offense though.
Where to watch
Tonight’s game will be broadcast on SNLA and ATTP, and streaming on MLB.TV for out of market subscribers.
