Los Angeles shut out Detroit 3-0 yesterday.
The Tigers couldn’t get much of anything going in yesterday afternoon’s game. Their lineup went a combined 4-30 against the Dodgers pitchers and the Dodgers put up a string of one-run innings in the seventh, eighth, and ninth to seal the victory. Those runs came on RBI singles by Adrian Gonzalez and Justin Turner, and a solo home run by Yasmani Grandal.
The Dodgers used four pitchers in yesterday’s action. Hyun-jin Ryu, who started the game, went five strong innings, allowing three hits and four walks. Only one of those hits, a double by Ian Kinsler, was for extra bases. LA’s relievers then combined for four innings of work, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out six.
Game 3 Starters – Kenta Maeda (RHP) vs Justin Verlander (RHP)
Kenta Maeda comes into Sunday with a 3.76 ERA and 1.13 WHIP on the season. He also sports an opponent’s batting average of .235. Maeda has been stellar in August, going 2-0 and allowing only four earned runs in 17.1 innings of work while striking out 20. The righty has only given up 15 home runs all season, and four came in a single game against the Phillies back in April.
Verlander has a 4.11 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 2017, and his 2.38 K/BB is the worst it has been since 2008. He has pitched a combined 21 innings in August, and allowed seven runs, although five came in his last start against Texas. Although his season K/BB has not been great, the Detroit right-hander has struck out 24 this month while only walking three.

Who’s Hot and Who’s Not
Corey Seager is hitting .338 in August with one home run and nine RBIs. In his last four games, Logan Forsythe is .385, going 5-13 with three doubles and three RBIs. Justin Turner comes into Sunday with a 1.048 OPS in the 16 games in August. The third baseman also has 15 RBIs in that same span.
Yasiel Puig is hitting just .133 over the course of the past week. He has also struck out five times in his last 18 plate appearances and has an OPS of .478 in that span. Yasmani Grandal is posting a .185 batting average in August so far although he is on a four-game hitting streak.
James McCann is hitting .298 in his last 16 games. Of his 17 hits in that span though, only two have been for extra bases. Justin Upton continues his strong August, rocking a 1.086 OPS as of Sunday. The outfielder has eight home runs in 17 games this month.
Nicholas Castellanos has struck out 18 times his last 18 games and is batting just .247 during that streak with a .650 OPS. August has been downright terrible for Jose Iglesias, who is hitting .128 on the month. The translates to six hits in 47 at-bats. He is 2-20 with zero walks in his last five games.
Prediction: Dodgers 5 -3 Tigers
The Dodgers are on a roll, but this pitching matchup is fairly even. Even though Verlander hasn’t been amazing this season, we all know what he’s capable of and he could easily come into Sunday with ace-calibre stuff. I have to take the Dodgers lineup over the Tigers though. It’s just way too stacked from top to bottom.
