New York Mets: 5 potential free agent targets who could come to Queens

This winter could be make-or-break for New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson.

After a pennant in 2015 and a wild card berth in 2016, the Mets entered 2017 with designs on making another title challenge. The result was much different. Injuries decimated the team after a bright start, and the team eventually finished 70-92, 27 games behind the Washington Nationals in fourth place in the NL East. The trade deadline saw the Mets dump a bunch of veterans in minimum-return salary dumps, leaving positions that were fairly strong rather bare by the end of the season.

Alderson now finds himself in a pickle. His team finished a disaster zone, and the future is very cloudy. The Mets still have good pieces on the team, but they're in that weird middle zone between being contenders and being rebuild-ready. Whether Alderson makes effective moves could decide which option the team is closer to come next winter and if it's the latter, they will likely go down it without him. According to some reports, Mets ownership may be willing to spend again this winter to allow him to make the team competitive again.

What could Alderson do with the Wilpons' money if he's allowed to? Here are five possible targets for the Mets.
