JD Martinez is the biggest name among outfielders on the free agent market after putting up a career season (45 HR, 104 RBI, .303 AVG) with the Tigers and Diamondbacks last year. Having Scott Boras as his agent will help Martinez get the money he deserves this offseason too. Though many teams aren’t in desperate need of a corner outfielder, Martinez would prove to be a major upgrade for many teams looking to contend for the postseason in 2018. That said, which teams are in the best position to land the slugging outfielder?
1 Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks acquired Martinez from the Detroit Tigers on July 19 for three minor league prospects after they found out outfielder Yasmany Tomas would likely miss the rest of the season with a groin injury suffered in June. Martinez didn't miss a beat, hitting 29 home runs in a two-month span with the club.
Martinez would be a nice upgrade defensively over Yasmany Tomas but with the contracts of Tomas and Zack Greinke eating most of the team's payroll, it may be more difficult for the club to bring back Martinez, especially with his recent hire of Scott Boras as his agent. The Diamondbacks will either have to move Tomas or hope Martinez takes less money to return to the desert next season if they want to bring him back.
2 San Francisco Giants
After a dismal 64-98 season, the Giants majorly need a power hitter in the middle of the lineup. Martinez would be a huge boost for a team that hit the fewest amount of home runs in the league last season. San Francisco hasn't had a consistent left fielder for years either. The club used nine different players at the position last season, with Jarrett Parker being the "primary" left fielder playing 42 games in left.
The Giants could use consistency and power in a corner outfield. With Hunter Pence being injury prone over the last three seasons, Martinez could slide to right field as well to give Pence an occasional day off to avoid injury. If the Giants lose out on the Giancarlo Stanton sweepstakes, look for them to pursue Martinez as a backup plan.
3 Boston Red Sox
After two straight early postseason exits, the Red Sox are looking for more depth in a lineup filled with young talent. Martinez would be a perfect fit in Boston, especially with the short fences in right field and the Green Monster over in left. Boston also hit the fewest amount of home runs in the American League last year and in reality, Boston might be the only team in Boras's opinion that would give Martinez the money he deserves.
Martinez would be an upgrade for a club that's searching for someone to fill the shoes of David Ortiz and an offensive upgrade over an inconsistent Jackie Bradley Jr.. If the Red Sox can move Bradley Jr., that means Mookie Betts would play center field with Andrew Benintendi and Martinez in the corners.
4 Cleveland Indians
With Jay Bruce hitting the market, the Indians are another team searching for some depth in the outfield. If Bruce returns, the Indians likely won't pursue Martinez. If he doesn't come back, it would make perfect sense for Cleveland to sign Martinez.
Michael Brantley's option was picked up last week by the club but due to his injury history, the Indians don't have a lot of reliability in a young outfield. Martinez would provide a veteran presence to Bradley Zimmer, Tyler Naquin, and Brandon Guyer, who will compete for the center field job next season and also provide more power to a lineup of Jason Kipnis, Edwin Encarnacion, Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez.
5 Toronto Blue Jays
If the Blue Jays decide not to go into a rebuilding mode, Martinez would be a huge upgrade and great offensive replacement over Jose Bautista. For a team already thriving in power with Josh Donaldson, Justin Smoak, and Kendrys Morales, Martinez would make a dangerous lineup even more dangerous.
Martinez would also provide the ability to get on base, which is something Smoak and Morales aren't strong at unless they get hits. The biggest question involving Martinez and the Blue Jays is whether Toronto will rebuild the roster this offseason or not.
