A travel day gives us 10 games to pick from, and that’s thanks to a rainout giving us the Indians & Twins game. There aren’t many great players going tonight with Giancarlo Stanton and Mike Trout on an off-day and none of the leading Cy Young candidates pitching. However, there are gems if you dig deep enough.
Best DFS MLB Pitchers for August 17, 2017
There aren’t many good options tonight, but if you are willing to take on a little risk, the returns could be huge.
Chris Archer @ Toronto Blue Jays: $11,900 DraftKings, FPPG – 21.0
Archer is posting the best K/9 rate (11.1) of his career this season. That alone is a good reason to play him. Combine it with a low BB/9 rate (2.8) and a 3.17 FIP and you have a player that can dominate teams like the Blue Jays.
Archer has already met Toronto three times this year and done well against them. In 21 innings he has an ERA of 2.57 with a 0.905 WHIP and 24 strikeouts. That kind of track record makes an investment of almost $12,000 far more palatable.
Carlos Carrasco @ Minnesota Twins: $11,100 DraftKings, FPPG – 19.3
We recommended him yesterday, but a rainout pushes his start to tonight, and it’s just as good a matchup as it was 24 hours ago.
Carrasco is the biggest name going tonight, but not the most expensive pitcher. As a result, he is good value tonight, especially as his opposing pitcher is set to be Kyle Gibson who has a 6.02 ERA. This should be a comfortable win.
Jameson Taillon vs St. Louis Cardinals: $9,600 DraftKings, FPPG – 13.4
Taillon’s 4.50 ERA is not particularly inviting. But a 3.36 FIP suggests there is better to come from him this season.
That’s based on a low 0.8 HR/9 rate, 2.8 BB/9, and a very nice 8.9 K/9, which is a very nice set of stats to back in your DFS side. Still, the Cardinals are a lineup that can cause issues and there is a risk with playing Taillon. While his last two starts have been good, it was only on July 25 when the Giants, with one of the worst lineup in baseball, lit him up for nine earned runs in three innings of work.
Best DFS MLB Hitters for August 17, 2017
With no Giancarlo Stanton tonight, who else should you spend your budget on?
Joey Votto @ Chicago Cubs: $4,600 DraftKings, FPPG – 10.1
Votto doesn’t hit lefties that well. Then again, 95% of MLB hitters would love his split against lefties. A .280/.415/.576 slugging is solid even if it is 50 points lower in batting average than he is against right-handers. However, his HR% is 0.4% better against lefties, so going against Jon Lester tonight doesn’t really phase me, and the low price makes me very keen on him.
Jake Lamb @ Houston Astros: $4,400 DraftKings, FPPG – 9.4
Lamb has had a relatively quiet August, with just two home runs (both on August 8) and six doubles, but he is batting .289 this month and has 12 RBI. For a player with good pop (25 homers, .533 slugging) this price is low, especially when the surrounding lineup is strong enough to drive him home and present RBI opportunities.
Michael Conforto vs New York Yankees: $4,200 DraftKings, FPPG – 9.1
Luis Severino is on the mound tonight for the Yankees and is having a superb season, but Conforto is having a strong year against right-handed pitching. With a .302/.417/.601 slash line and 20 of his 26 homers against them this is cheap for a player like Conforto, despite going against someone as good as Severino.
Best DFS stack options
It’s a risky tactic, but on a day with a light slate, it could bring big returns.
Atlanta Braves @ Jeff Hoffman (COL)
Hoffman is carrying a 5.13 ERA in his 15 starts this year, and while he is keeping the ball in the park, when pitching at Coors nothing is guaranteed. The Braves haven’t hit particularly well in this series, but they are fairly cheap. Nick Markakis ($4,300), Ender Inciarte ($4,200), and Danny Santana ($3,900) are nice options tonight.
