August 1 sees a lot of quality pitchers take to the mound, and more than a few players in new uniforms following a busy trade deadline. With two months of the fantasy season left, every day counts, so let’s get into our picks for a very busy Tuesday in the Majors.
Best DFS MLB Pitchers for August 1, 2017
With a lot of ace-quality pitchers going tonight, there are almost too many options. We narrow it down to three arms for you.
Max Scherzer @ Miami Marlins: $13,200 DraftKings, FPPG – 30.0
We’re going with Scherzer over the other options due to the matchup. While Chris Sale and Carlos Carrasco take on each other and Chris Archer is going against Houston, Scherzer has a comfortable spot in Marlins Park and a weak opposing pitcher for his team to hit around.
He may be the most expensive option today, but with good reason. A 2.23 ERA, 12.4 K/9, and measly 1.1 HR/9 rate should be more than enough to convince you to shell out for him.
Carlos Carrasco @ Boston Red Sox: $9,800 DraftKings, FPPG – 20.2
Wait, didn’t I say Carrasco is going against Chris Sale? I did, but he’s also facing a Red Sox lineup that is not as good as people think. The Sox have been in a funk of late, and with no bats coming in over the deadline to help; they are stuck with the dreadful Mitch Moreland at first, a slumping Xander Bogaerts, a rookie at third, and very little power to speak of.
Getting Carrasco at under $10,000 is great value, and even if he leaves with a no-decision due to Sale blanking his own lineup, he should pick up strong points.
Carlos Martinez @ Milwaukee Brewers: $8,800 DraftKings, FPPG – 20.0
Martinez is a quiet ace in 2017 mostly due to a 7-8 record, but he shouldn’t be ignored in situations like this. $8,800 is good value, and his 9.6 K/9 plays well against a lineup like Milwaukee that can be so boom or bust.
In 12.1 innings against the Brewers this year Martinez has 11 K’s and a 1.135 WHIP. His ERA is high, but most of the damage was off two bombs. If he has his best stuff, he can dominate the Brewers, and even if he doesn’t quite have his best he can still do very well.
Best DFS MLB Hitters for August 1, 2017
With everyone available tonight who should you be looking at for your lineup?
Mike Trout vs Philadelphia Phillies: $4,900 DraftKings, FPPG – 11.6
When Trout is under $5,000 you have to give him serious consideration. Since returning to the lineup he’s hit .315, got three homers in 64 plate appearances and stolen a pair of bases. He is still very much an elite player, but he’s not valued like it today.
Yoenis Cespedes @ Colorado Rockies: $4,300 DraftKings, FPPG – 7.5
Cespedes has only had one homer since the All-Star break, though he does have four doubles and two triples in his 63 plate appearances to help boost his slugging percentage to .492 since the break. A series in Coors Field could be the tonic the Mets outfielder needs to find that power stroke once again.
Mookie Betts vs Cleveland Indians: $3,700 DraftKings, FPPG – 9.5
Betts has not had a great July, but the guy still has 17 homers, 17 steals, and a .344 OBP. He is still a very, very good player and even going against Carrasco this valuation is laughable. He went 2-for-5 with a run and three RBI last night, that’s the kind of damage he can do regularly. Get him in your lineup today.
Best stack options
Which teams have a good pitcher matchup that you can exploit today?
Pittsburgh Pirates vs Homer Bailey (CIN)
Of his seven starts this year, Bailey has allowed five or more earned runs in four of them. He has allowed six homers in just 33.1 innings and has a 20:14 K:BB ratio. His 2.010 WHIP and 8.37 ERA make him a dream for stacking. There are no guarantees, but the red-hot Andrew McCutchen ($5,400), Adam Frazier ($4,300), Starling Marte ($3,900), and Josh Bell ($3,700) should all be considered tonight.
Toronto Blue Jays @ Mike Pelfrey (CWS)
Mike Pelfrey isn’t having a completely disastrous season. His 4.73 ERA and 1.458 WHIP are about on par for his career, except he is allowing homers and walks far more frequently this year than he has, and that leads to opportunities for blowouts. Justin Smoak ($5,200), Kendrys Morales ($4,400), Steve Pearce ($4,300), and Josh Donaldson ($3,900) are all intriguing options.
