Counter Logic Gaming vs FlyQuest: 2017 Summer NA LCS Regional Qualifiers preview, prediction & live stream

FlyQuest made it through the first round of the Gauntlet, and are now preparing to face CLG on September 9th!

Who would’ve thought FlyQuest would be the ones to upset Team Dignitas! Sure, you could say DIG weren’t playing their A-game, but credit where credit’s due, FlyQuest absolutely blew them away. Hai and Moon bring a ton of playmaking to the table, and with the bot lane of WildTurtle and LemonNation stepping up, FlyQuest have a legitimate chance to make another miracle run.

It’s hard to put a finger on CLG. While their solo laners grew strong to the point where Darshan and Huhi are the main carries on the team, everything else seems to have declined. Stixxay and Aphromoo no longer pose a threat in the bottom lane, and with OmarGod looking lost in the jungle, CLG don’t have many weapons left in their playbook.

Match Preview

Top Lane matchup

Darshan is an absolute monster. Sporting a 4.2 KDA and 7.6 CS per minute, CLG’s top laner went from being one of the most inconsistent players in the league to a calm, cool, and collected carry his team relies on.

Meanwhile, FLY Balls is just holding the line. With a 2.1 KDA and 7.9 CS per minute, he rarely—if ever—comes out with outplays and solo leads, but he makes up for it with great team play. Even so, that’s not going to cut it against a player of Darshan’s caliber.

Verdict: CLG Darshan secures the top lane lead.

Jungle matchup

At this point, we feel like a broken record for saying OmarGod is underwhelming. Unfortunately, that still holds true. CLG’s rookie jungler struggles to make his presence known, and has a 3.9 KDA and 3.9 CS per minute to show for his efforts.

And while Moon’s 2.3 KDA and 4.3 CS per minute don’t look great either, the numbers don’t do him justice, because FlyQuest’s jungler is the main thing that’s keeping them together in the early game.

Verdict: FLY Moon outmaneuvers in the jungle.

Mid Lane matchup

Huhi has been on fire lately. With a 4.7 KDA and 8.9 CS per minute, he’s a well-rounded mid laner that’s especially effective in teamfights and skirmishes. But he’s not what you’d call lane-dominant.

And that’s exactly the type of opponent Hai wants to face. Holding a 2.3 KDA and 8.6 CS per minute, FlyQuest’s mid laner is a selfless carry that makes his presence known through roams and cross-map plays. Huhi may have the edge here, but it’s not as big as CLG would want.

Verdict: CLG Huhi claims the mid lane victory.

Bot Lane matchup

It’s weird to live in a world where CLG’s bot lane is the weak part of their team. With a 5.7 KDA and 8.7 CS per minute, Stixxay is a decent marksman, but he has a hard time showing up anywhere other than 5v5s. And his support—Ahpromoo—has been all over the place with a number of shaky showings and a 3.3 KDA of his own.

Meanwhile, FlyQuest’s duo stepped up tremendously. Sporting a 2.6 KDA and 9.1 CS per minute, WildTurtle embraced his aggressive playstyle to become the main carry on his team. And—surprisingly enough—LemonNation (2.3 KDA) adapted to the playmaking meta while having his usual cast of ranged supports to fall back onto.

Verdict: FLY’s WildTurtle and LemonNation outgun the enemy bot lane.

Prediction

This is a lot closer than you might think! With the bot lane and jungle discrepancies, CLG’s win conditions are fairly thin. At the same time, FlyQuest have a much higher playmaking potential in the early game thanks to Hai and Moon, and their bottom lane will provide them with a smooth transition into the mid game. In the end, everything will come down to team play and shot calling—and that’s the part of the game where FlyQuest's follow through is unmatched. Our prediction: a 3-2 victory for FlyQuest.
