FM17: West Ham Player Ratings Revealed

Here's the West Ham team on Football Manager 2017 with all the player ratings and values revealed and broken down to help you understand your squad.

West Ham’s squad isn’t too bad to begin with and it should be enough to get you into the top six if you work hard on your tactics. I think your key issue is your striker. Andy Carroll is best suited to a direct, route one style of play, but the rest of your squad aren’t. You should look to sell Carroll and sign a more complete striker that can play alternate styles of football so you don’t have to restrict yourself.

Furthermore, think hard about your tactics. West Ham have an abundance of central defenders and not enough fullbacks. Perhaps three at the back is your best bet, using wingbacks further up the field, unless you sign a right back from the off, which could prove difficult given the Hammers’ small transfer budget.

It’s worth pointing out that Michail Antonio can play as a wingback, hence why a 3-5-2 ro 3-4-3 might be most effective.

West Ham’s starting transfer and wage budgets are as follows:

Transfer budget: £6,000,000

Wage budget: £1,443,918

GOALKEEPERS

PositionPlayerCurrent RatingPotential RatingAgeNationalityValue
GoalkeeperDarren Randolph2.52.529Ireland£4.8m
GoalkeeperAdrian3329Spain£6.5m

Adrian is your best rated ‘keeper with three-star current and potential ability, so it may be worth seeking out a long-term replacement, but with a very small budget, it should just be a thought in the back of your mind for now. It’s not a pressing concern and he should be enough to take you into the top six.

DEFENDERS

DefenderAlvaro Arbeloa3333Spain£625k
DefenderAngelo Ogbonna3.53.528Italy£12m
DefenderWinston Reid3.53.527New Zealand£16m
DefenderJames Collins3332Wales£925k
DefenderHavard Nordveit3326Norway£12.25m
DefenderAaron Cresswell3.53.526England£14m
DefenderArthur Masuaku2.53.522France£8m
DefenderSam Byram2.53.522England£6.75m

The Hammers actually have a slightly imbalanced defensive unit, with numerous centre-backs and not enough fullbacks. With Aaron Cresswell and Sam Byram you do have two, however, that can reach 3.5 star potential. If you’re looking to play four at the back, signing a right sided fullback should be a priority. Michail Antonio won’t make the grade as an out-and-out defender. Arbeloa can do a decent enough job, but he shouldn’t be considered as a solution to this problem.

You could also use a leading centre-back to take charge of your defence. James Collins is not the man to do so. Reid and Ogbonna are your best-rated centre-halves at 3.5 star current ability.

MIDFIELDERS

MidfielderGokhan Tore33.524Turkey£5.5m
MidfielderJonathan Calleri3422Argentina£8.5m
MidfielderDimitri Payet4429France£24.5m

West Ham’s midfield is much better than their defence. You have good squad depth as your worst rated players are still 3.5 stars current and potential ability. You also have Manuel Lanzini, Jonathan Calleri, who’s on loan, and Dimitri Payet all with the ability to reach four stars. Payet actually begins with four-star current ability and he’s going to be your key man for creativity. At 29, however, he’s not a long-term solution and replacements, again, should be in the back of your mind.

STRIKERS

PositionPlayerCurrent RatingPotential RatingAgeNationalityValue
StrikerAndy Carroll3.53.527England£20.5m
StrikerSimone Zaza3.53.525Italy£16.5m
StrikerDiafra Sakho3326Senegal£15.5m

You start with three strikers, but none are particularly great. Simone Zaza is on loan and will return to Juventus at the end of the season. With players like Payet and Lanzini, I don’t think you should be looking to play route one football. Therefore, Andy Carroll should be sold immediately as he only suits this type of football. For £20million at least, i’d drive him there myself. Look to purchase a more complete forward with the proceeds of this departure.
