FM17: Watford Player Ratings Revealed

Here's the Watford team on Football Manager 2017 with all the player ratings and values revealed and broken down to help you understand your squad.

To survive in the Premier League, Watford do have a good enough squad, but with a small transfer budget, you’re unlikely to be able to make that quality signing needed to really push on into positions higher in the table. I think survival or a high bottom half finish should be the aim until you can gather the necessary financial resources to really add quality to your squad.

There are some good players in there, namely Roberto Pereyra, Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney, but they’re scattered few and far between amongst some pretty average names.

I think you’ll need to build a solid core for your team. As i say, Pereyra and Deeney can form the attacking part of that, but i think Watford need a goalkeeper, centre-back and solid central mdifielder. Etienne Capoue can play either as a centre-half or holding midfielder and his role in the team shouldn’t be underestimated.

Watford’s strating transfer and wage budgets are as follows:

Transfer budget: £8,000,000

Wage budget: £1,051,928

GOALKEEPERS

PositionPlayerCurrent RatingPotential RatingAgeNationalityValue
GoalkeeperHeurelho Gomes3.53.535Brazil£1m
GoalkeeperCostel Pantilimon3329Romani£7.25m

I think Watford have some goalkeeping issues moving forwards. Heurelho Gomes is definitely a solid choice for your first year, at 3.5 stars, but he’s 35-years-old and probably has one, maybe two, good seasons left in him. Costel Pantilimon is also a decent bet at three-stars, but, again, he’s not a long-term solution to this problem. Look to invest in a goalkeeper as your priority.

DEFENDERS

PositionPlayerCurrent RatingPotential RatingAgeNationalityValue
DefenderYounes Kaboul3.53.530France£4.6m
DefenderSebastian Prodl3.53.529Austria£7.75m
DefenderChristian Kabasele3325Belgiun£7.25m
DefenderCraig Cathcart3.53.527N. Ireland£9.25m
DefenderMiguel Britos3.53.530Uruguay£4.2m
Defenderetienne Capoue3.5427France£19.25m
DefenderDaryl Janmaat3.53.526Netherlands£12m
DefenderBrice Dja Djedje3325Ivoy Coast£7.25m

Watford actually have a pretty solid group of defenders as only two players are three-stars, Brice Dja Djedje and Christian Kabasele the lowest rated of the bunch. In Etienne Capoue you have a defender, or even midfielder, capable of reaching four stars and Craig Cathcart, Sebastian Prodl, Younes Kaboul and Daryl Janmaat should be your first choice picks at 3.5 stars. Watford, in reality, opt for a three man defence and given the lack of fullbacks, your best option may be to do the same.

MIDFIELDERS

PositionPlayerCurrent RatingPotential RatingAgeNationalityValue
MidfielderCamilo Zuniga3330Colombia£2.7m
MidfielderJose Holebas3332Greece£1.9m
MidfielderNordin Amarbat3329Morocco£8.75m
MidfielderAdlene Guedioura3330Algeria£3.9m
MidfielderBen Watson3.53.530England£2.8m
MidfielderValon Behrami3.53.531Switzerland£4.3m
MidfielderAbdoulaye Doucoure2.5323France£6.75m
MidfielderRoberto Pereyra4425Argentia£27m
MidfielderIsaac Success33.520Nigeria£10.5m
MidfielderKenedy3320Brazil£10.5m

Following from that point on a three-man defence, Nordin Amarbat is a decent three-star wingback you could deploy. However, the midfield is nothing spectacular as most of your players are capped at three-star ability. Roberto Pereyra is your best player with four-star ability and you’re lucky he was a permanent acquisition in the summer. Isaac Succees, too, is one for the future as he is 20-years-old and has the ability to reach 3.5 stars. I do think investment is needed a couple of quality central midfielders, perhaps one defensive option and a playmaker.

STRIKERS

PositionPlayerCurrent RatingPotential RatingAgeNationalityValue
StrikerOdion Ighalo3.53.527Nigeria£12.5m
StrikerStefano Okaka3326Italy£11.25m
StrikerTroy Deeney4428England£18.75m

Watford aren’t short of quality up front, as it goes, and you have a choice of three strikers to choose from. If you do opt for a back three, you’ll have to play two up front and you should choose Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney for these spots. Deeney will be your key goal-scorer as he has four-star ability; Ighalo is 3.5 stars and Okaka three.
