FM17: Stoke City Player Ratings Revealed

Here's the Stoke City team on Football Manager 2017 with all the player ratings and values revealed and broken down to help you understand your squad.

It’s surprising to see Stoke City where they are in the league at present as, looking through their squad, it’s clear that they certainly have some quality players and they’re underperforming. You should be able to do a better job than Mark Hughes in your first season given the quality that’s present. In Jack Butland, Gianni Imbula and Joe Allen you have a solid core of players, plus Xherdan Shaqiri out wide, but you’re looking a top centre-back and striker. The striker problem is only set to get worse once the on-loan Wilfried Bony leaves the club.

In your first season, mind, getting the best from Bony is dependent on your tacitcs. In reality, Stoke try and play possession football, but i think Bony’s most suited to a direct, route one game because of his aerial ability as a target man. It’s up to you how to proceed, but be wary that as your main striker, you’ll be relying on him for goals. No goals and you’ll slide down the table quickly. Furthermore, with a small transfer budget, it might be difficult to replace him with a permanent option of equal quality.

Stoke City’s starting transfer and wage budgets are as follows:

Transfer budget: £9,500,000

Wage budget: £1,287,758

GoalkeeperJack Butland3.5423England£17.5m

Stoke are sorted in the goalkeeping department and you should be starting Jack Butland from the get go. He’s already rated higher than Lee grant and can reach four-star ability in the future. He’s England’s next great goalkeeping hope.

DefenderMarc Muniesa2.53.524Spain£5.25m
DefenderRyan Shawcross3.53.528England£15m

I think Stoke’s defence is the probably the worst aspect of their team and the one that will need complete rebuilding. Bruno Marins Indi is the youngest player, though he’s on loan and will need replacing when he returns to Porto. Shawcross, at 3.5 stars, is still solid, but you should search for a better partner, one that has high potential. At fullback, Stoke are poor. Your best option is the aging 3.5 star Glen Johnson. Fullbacks should be your transfer priority. Muniesa can play left back, but he’s predominantly at centre-half.

Your midfield options are pretty good to begin with and should be enough to see you into the top half, at least. Shaqiri, Allen and Imbula are four-star players and they should be the focal points; Shaqiri out wide, Allen either playing deep midfield or behind the striker and Imbula holding. Ramadam Sobhi has the potential to reach four stars, though at 19 and better options ahead, you should send him on loan and watch him develop. If you’re short of funds, look to sell Charlie Adam, Jon Walters and Stephen Ireland.

StrikerJulien Ngoy1.5318Belgium£240k
StrikerWilfried Bony3327Ivory Coast£14m
StrikerPeter Crouch2.52.535England£925k

I think Stoke have problems up front. Peter Crouch is well past his sell-by date at age 35 and only 2.5 stars. Wilfried Bony is a great option, but he’s unfortunately only at Stoke on loan and may be too expensive to sign fulltime. Bojan can play there, but he’s best suited to a number ten role and that’s where you should play him.
