If there’s one thing pretty much everyone loves, it’s a bargain, especially when you can sign a player for a fraction of his worth, because his club became victim to an FM 16 relegation; which is like any other relegation, only worse, on FM, what goes down doesn’t always come back up. Now, most people are probably aware of the best players at the Premier League’s relegation-battling clubs. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that Callum Wilson will probably be sought after if Bournemouth get relegated. It does however require a savvy FM expert to know which players often get relegated on FM, how much they become available for, and how realistic of a signing they are. I’ve tested these players across multiple game saves to comprise this list of the 5 best bargains you can sign cheap. All of the following are players who play for clubs who usually get relegated in FM 16:

Cost – £5m
West Brom are like Crystal Palace in that their relegation status fluctuates; sometimes they survive, sometimes they don’t. When they don’t survive however, that’s where you come in with your £5m to prize him away. Berahino was always a stop-gap option for me, as I had Wilson and Vardy waiting in the wings, so I let him have a season under my tutelage then turned that £5m into £31m, selling him to Atletico the next season.
Cost – £4m
Let’s be honest now, who’s really saying no to Riyad Mahrez for a paltry fee of just £4m and wages of £40k? When Leicester incur that inevitable relegation, Mahrez is usually itching for a move to pastures new, and is a perfect right-wing compliment. Like Vardy, he fits in well at any side, and if nothing else, can be signed for £4m and sold for nearly three times that price. A win-win? I think so…
Cost – £6m
Wilson is quickly becoming my favourite FM16 player, because he can be signed on the cheap and scores a ton of goals. As well as that, he chips in with a few assists too, and doesn’t have too many dry-spells where he doesn’t score. His wages are reasonable (40k/week) too, and can fit in at any side – from a title chaser to a relegation-battler. Who else can you sign for £6m that contributes towards 30 goals in 32 Premier League games?
Cost – £7.5m
Unlike in real life, Leicester do quite poorly on FM and usually get relegated. Vardy’s explanation as a bargain is pretty self-explanatory on the surface. But here’s the catch, even if Vardy struggles in his first season, he has this weird curse on FM where he comes to life in his second season and becomes an absolute beast. Perfect for pretty much any side – a title chaser’s back-up, a European football hunter’s main striker, a relegation fighter’s star player – Vardy does the lot. I mean, just have a look at these screenshots and try to deny Vardy’s brilliance:
Cost – Free
Johnson is a safe-bet for any side, as Sunderland almost always get relegated, meaning he leaves on a free transfer. He is a slight gamble, as there are younger, more capable options. However, if like me you took charge of a cash-strapped side like QPR, you have very little room to add many players to your squad, so free transfers like Johnson are worth their weight in gold, especially when you only receive 25% of player sales and have a crippling transfer budget to work with.
