FM 16 Liverpool: Complete Guide (Wonderkids, Transfer/Wage Budget, Who to Buy/Sell)

FM 16 Liverpool complete guide to transfers, wages and signings.

FM 16 Liverpool – Between Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s season has hardly blown anyone away. They’ve been average, conceded too many sloppy goals and not scored enough. As a Football Manager fan this makes little sense, given how incredible their squad could be in a virtual world. They may struggle in real life but on FM, they have one of the most underrated squads in the league. Their youth contingent (Ibe, Can, Origi, Gomez, Moreno) makes for a nice young core, whilst the likes of Sturridge, Clyne and Henderson are usually better virtually than they are in real life, which is saying a lot! So how can you turn this Liverpool side from a concoction of maybe’s into a world-class side?

Finances

We’ve given you the minimum and maximum budget available, depending on what your expectations are.

Transfer Budget – £16.6m – 22.17m

Wage Budget – £2.24m – 2.59m

Key players to build your team around

The following players should never be sold and should form the spine of your team for the foreseeable future based on player ratings. Some are obvious choices, others less so, but none of the following players are easily replaced.

FM 16: Premier League Wonderkids XI

Emre Can

Age: 21
Nationality: Germany

Can has 5-star potential and can cover a number of positions across the back four and also further afield. When you start a game, Can is 21 but already has the impressive attributes: Pace (17), Passing (15), Technique (15), Strength (15), Composure (16), Determination (16). When you consider his best position is at centre back (at least on FM), and those are Can’s stats as a 3-star player, imagine how good he can become when he fulfils his 5-star potential…

Phillipe Coutinho

Age: 23
Nationality: Brazil

We all know how good Coutinho is, but the issue is if the system you implement caters for a number 10. For me it’s as simple as that. If you play with someone in the hole constantly – he’s your man. If you absolutely reject the notion of playing a formation with a number 10, sell him for the astronomical price he demands (at least £42m+)

Joe Gomez

Age: 18
Nationality: England

Perhaps an unusual choice here given how raw he still is, but take nothing away from Gomez, he is FM16 gold and turns into one hell of a defender. He’s comfortable playing at CB or RB, and brings with him 4.5-star potential which unlike a lot of ‘wonderkids’, will actually be fulfilled at some point if you use him correctly. A mainstay in your defence for the next 10+ seasons.

Best youngsters to keep an eye on

The best players on your side that are 21 or younger that you need to keep an eye out for in future. If the player is under 21 and is already someone to build your team around, they won’t be included in this list.
I’d recommend you keep the following players to either integrate them into your first team or sell them on for a high price later on.

FM 16: Europe’s Best Wonderkids XI

Lazar Markovic

Age: 19
Nationality: Serbia

Markovic can be hit-or-miss on FM, but he’s someone who can be sold for a ridiculous price. In one of my game saves, I couldn’t find space for him in the team following a lukewarm loan spell at Fenerbahce, but managed to get £38m for him. He may well come good for you, but if he doesn’t, you have the security of being able to recoup a rather large fee for him.

Jordon Ibe

Age: 20
Nationality: England

Like Can, Ibe is able to play in a number of positions and is also a great ‘super-sub’ to have. That is until he becomes good enough to start every week, but that may take a while. Whatever you do, don’t let him rot in the reserves.

Players you should consider letting go of

The following are players who could easily be replaced for one reason or another. Check out our guide on how you can sign players for cheap.

Adam Lallana

You can get up to £17m for Lallana who simply doesn’t fit that well in this Liverpool side. You’ve got Coutinho/Firmino to play in the middle, and Lallana isn’t the best winger available, so it makes sense to offload him while you can.

Lucas

Finding a suitor willing to pay £10m+ for the Brazilian may be difficult, but if you can, ship him off and bring in someone like Tielemans/Romero/Weigl.

Recommended signings

Liverpool could do with a prolific goalscorer and also someone else to beef up the midfield a bit. Check out our guide on the Premier League’s Best Wonderkids as it can help you find the best ones to signs but we’ve recommeneded a few below.

Callum Wilson (23)

Club: Bournemouth

Cost: £6-9m

Bournemouth almost always get relegated in their first season, making Callum Wilson available the majority of the time. If you get the chance to sign him, then take it, as Sturridge doesn’t always stay fit. Wilson is a goalscorer plain and simple and is a perfect replacement for Danny Ings, who is less prolific, but can be sold for around £15m. If you don’t want to wait a season, do what I did and fork out £14-18m to sign him from the start. You won’t regret it.

Lucas Romero (21)

Club: River Plate

Cost: £5-7m

Romero is a must-buy for any team in need of someone solid to enforce their midfield for a cheap fee. Romero will do a lot of the dirty work others don’t enjoy and do it well, and is also within your budget if you decide to sign Callum Wilson at the start.
