FIFA 19 Wonderkids: Best Portuguese players to sign in Career Mode

With Cristiano Ronaldo in the ranks, anything is possible for the Portuguese national team. However, once the five-time Balon d'Or winner hangs up his boots who will be the man to burden the hopes of his country? The likes of Renato Sanches and Ruben Neves have shown the quality they possess but who else will be a future star?

How to choose the best Portuguese wonderkids in FIFA 19 Career Mode

To make this list each player must meet certain criteria. To begin with, each wonderkid must be 21 years old or younger at the start of FIFA 19 Career Mode. These youngsters must start with an overall of 70 or higher meaning they can contribute in the first team from the beginning. Each player must then be able to improve to an 80 OVR or higher making them a top class player.

Just 84 minutes of league football have yielded two goals for Benfica starlet Joao Felix so far this season. The 18-year-old has started just once, scoring in the 2-0 win over Desportivo Aves before being replaced due to an ankle injury which has prevented him from making any further appearances.

With the wages much lower in Portugal, Joao Felix offers something of a bargain as a wonderkid as he is available for just £11.3 million. The starlet can progress in FIFA 19 Career Mode from a 71 to an 87 overall and become a world class attacker.

Ruben Neves (OVR 80 - POT 87)

Age: 21Position: CMClub: WolvesCountry: PortugalBest Stats: 85 Long Passing, 84 Short Passing, 83 VisionCost: £37.9 million (release clause)Wage: £52,000

Having excelled in the Championship last year, former Porto star Ruben Neves has been ever-present for Wolves in the Premier League following their promotion. Neves has found life in the top flight much trickier after an impressive Premier League debut in which he scored and provided an assist, but has yet to register a goal or assist since.

Still just 21 years old, Neves already has an 80 OVR with the potential to reach 87. The classy midfielder is an excellent passer and has a penchant for spectacular goals whether they be free kicks or shots from distance. He will set managers back over £30 million on FIFA 19 but he is worth every penny.

Diogo Leite (OVR 74 - POT 87)

Age: 19Position: CBClub: PortoCountry: PortugalBest Stats: 80 Aggression, 77 Standing Tackle, 75 StrengthCost: £21.9 million (release clause)Wage: £4,000

Teenage sensation Diogo Leite started the first three league games for Porto this season, scoring once and picking up two yellow cards. The 19-year-old has a big future ahead of him but is still impetuous leading to being booked regularly. He is sure to be involved in the first team more throughout the season and continue to progress.

Leite starts FIFA 19 with a 74 overall and is a solid defender. The 6’2” Portugal under-21 international is aggressive and possesses a 75 rating for his defensive attributes, making him capable of contributing to most squads. His release clause is quite high at £21.9 million on FIFA 19 Career Mode but with an 87 potential he will be worth it, if you can be patient.

Goncalo Guedes (OVR 83 - POT 87)

Age: 21Position: LM, ST, RM, LWClub: ValenciaCountry: PortugalBest Stats: 90 Sprint Speed, 89 Acceleration, 86 DribblingCost: £65.1 million (release clause)Wage: £34,000

A muscle tear has prevented Goncalo Guedes from progressing in 2018/19 following an impressive first season in La Liga with Valencia. His five goals and 11 assists last term prompted Valencia to make his loan move from Paris permanent and he looks to be a future star.

Blessed with pace and skill, Guedes will terrify defenders with his ability on the ball. The Portuguese winger boasts 90 sprint speed, 86 dribbling and four-star skill moves making him a real threat from wide positions. Guedes will understandably not come cheap and managers will have to fork out over £60 million to land him on FIFA 19.

Rafael Leao (OVR 72 - POT 86)

Age: 19Position: ST, LMClub: LilleCountry: PortugalBest Stats: 87 Acceleration, 85 Sprint Speed, 77 StrengthCost: £15 million (release clause)Wage: £11,000

Rafael Leao looks to be an exciting talent and possess all the attributes to become a world class striker. The 19-year-old stands at 6’2”, is quick, strong and has an eye for goal that all the best strikers need. Having made the switch to Lille from Sporting CP in the summer, Leao has scored in his only start to date for the French club.

With an 86 potential, Leao is a future star on FIFA 19 and is already an extremely effective forward. His size and pace are a handful for any defender and he only gets better. Managers will need to pay £15 million for his services on FIFA 19's Career Mode but they will be getting a terrific young forward.

Gedson Fernandes (OVR 75 - POT 86)

Age: 19Position: CMClub: BenficaCountry: PortugalBest Stats: 88 Stamina, 81 Acceleration, 79 AgilityCost: £21.3 million (release clause)Wage: £5,000

19-year-old wonderkid Gedson Fernandes has a big future ahead of him, the Benfica midfielder has scored two and assisted three in all competitions this season. Fernandes was rewarded for his impressive displays with his first senior international call-up in September.

A well-balanced midfielder, Fernandes lowest attribute is his 61 heading accuracy. Starting FIFA 19 Career Mode with such a strong platform to improve, his £21 million release clause seems a bargain especially when you consider his 86 potential.

Diogo Jota (OVR 78 - POT 86)

Age: 21Position: LW, STClub: WolvesCountry: PortugalBest Stats: 89 Acceleration, 87 Agility, 87 BalanceCost: £28.6 million (release clause)Wage: £49,000

Diogo Jota has struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League after his excellent first season in England as Wolves sealed their promotion. Wolves made his loan permanent after he bagged 17 goals in the Championship and he was one of a number of Portuguese players to arrive at the Molineux.

Jota is a talented young winger with great potential on FIFA 19, he also boasts an excellent turn of pace with 89 acceleration and will trouble defences with 81 dribbling. The 21-year-old will cost just under £30 million and his wages are higher than usual due to the inflated wages of the Premier League.

Ruben Dias (OVR 79 - POT 85)

Age: 21Position: CBClub: BenficaCountry: PortugalBest Stats: 94 Aggression, 81 Heading Accuracy, 80 Standing TackleCost: £29 million (release clause)Wage: £9,000

Having progressed through the Benfica youth system, Ruben Dias has started all eight league games this season. The young defender has helped them to four clean sheets so far and contributed an assist as Benfica find themselves one point off the top spot.

Having already made five international appearances, Dias unsurprisingly has an impressive 85 potential. Boasting 80 standing tackle and 79 marking, Dias is an excellent defender at such a young age. The 6’1” centre back will cost £29 million but he's ready to play in most starting XI’s from the day one.

Diogo Dalot (OVR 72 - POT 84)

Age: 19Position: RB, LBClub: Manchester UnitedCountry: PortugalBest Stats: 80 Aggression, 79 Stamina, 78 JumpingCost: £8.5 million (release clause)Wage: £23,000

Diogo Dalot joined Premier League giants Manchester United in the summer for £20 million having only made eight first team appearances for Porto. Dalot is yet to feature in the Premier League but has played in the Europa League and EFL Cup, keeping a clean sheet in one game and grabbing an assist in the other.

Mobile, energetic and with good crossing ability, Dalot has the potential to become a top class full back on FIFA 19. Relatively cheap at just £8.5 million, Dalot can reach an 84 OVR making him a bargain for any manager able to snap him up.

Bruno Xadas (OVR 73 - POT 84)

Age: 20Position: RMClub: BragaCountry: PortugalBest Stats: 82 Curve, 81 Shot Power, 77 Long ShotsCost: £13.6 million (release clause)Wage: £8,000

Foot surgery has limited creative midfielder Bruno Xadas to just two substitute appearances for unbeaten Braga this season. The 20-year-old will be looking to get back to full fitness as soon as possible to try and improve his goal tally of two for the Portuguese club.

Tricky wide man Xadas offers creativity from the wing, his dribbling skills and mobility in particular will attract managers looking for a promising winger. With a 84 potential, the 20-year-old has plenty of room to improve and for just £13.6 million he can prove to be a bargain.
