Whether it be seasons mode, career mode, tournaments or just a straight up kick-off to hammer your mates, you need a quality team on FIFA 17. When you are a picking a team, focus on pace and finishing ability, and these two abilities can win matches alone. Having a solid defence, superb goalkeeper and creative midfielders are all important, but they don’t score the goals, so ensure you have plenty of firepower up top. RealSport takes you the top five teams to play as on FIFA 17.
It won’t surprise many that reigning Champions League and Club World Cup champions Real Madrid top our list. With Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale up top, few defences will be able to keep the pair quiet, and they have the reliable Sergio Ramos and architect Toni Kroos behind them.
It all depends on how attacking you want to go with Los Blancos, but if you stick with the current 4-3-3 attack formation, be sure to slip your mentality to ‘defensive’ so that you are not cut apart on the counter-attack. Alternatively, you can switch the 87-rated James Rodriguez for the more defensive minded Casemiro, and opt for the 4-3-3 holding system, to give yourself some more protection.
Your game plan should be get the ball wide, create one-on-ones with the full backs, and look to shoot at goal with Ronaldo and Bale, but with the option always to cross to the aerially strong Karim Benzema.
With that much attacking talent, it’s hard to ignore Argentina on FIFA 17. The international chokers are a popular side on Online Seasons, with Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria, Gonzalo Higuaín, Sergio Aguero and Paulo Dybala off the bench, goals are guaranteed.
4-4-2 makes perfect sense, but once again you can flick on that defensive mentality as wide men Messi and Di Maria are not renowned for their defensive work. Plus, right back Pablo Zabaleta lacks the pace he wants did, and left back Marco Rojo is the clear weak link in the side, with a rating of 79.
Ever Banega and Lucas Biglia are just about good enough to fend for themselves in midfield, and their task will be either to get the ball wide to the 93-rated Messi or Di Maria, or look to play the ball through or over the top to the pacey Sergio Aguero. If you get the ball out to Messi on the right, you will only be looking to shoot at goal, but with the also left-footed Di Maria out on the left, you can look to swing balls into the powerful Gonzalo Higuain, with Aguero lurking to pick up any scraps.
Lionel Messi features once again, this time with La Liga champions Barcelona. The Barca side is much more balanced than Real Madrid and Argentina, with Sergio Busquets offering the defence protection, and midfield partners Andres Iniesta and Ivan Rakitic performing box-to-box roles. But of course, the headlines go the dynamic front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar. Sergi Roberto is the one weak link in the side, so you that may encourage you to opt for the defensive mentality if your opponents have plenty of pace
You could opt to slightly alter the 4-3-3 holding system into a 4-3-2-1, to get Neymar and Messi close to the goals, but you will be able to get one-on-ones with defenders if you keep them out wide. All of Iniesta, Busquets and Rakitic have the ability to pick out any of the front three with a short or long pass, and with MSN up front, you will score more often than not when shooting on goal.
There is no weak-link in the Bayern Munich side, with no player rated below 84. There is plenty of firepower, with Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller and of course Robert Lewandowski all capable of finding the back of the net. Thiago and Arturo Vidal work well in defence and attack in the engine room, with the defence of Philipp Lahm, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and David Alaba near impenetrable. If anything does get through, your opponent will still have a tough task in beating the 92-rated Manuel Neuer.
For your formation, you should go for a 4-4-1-1, 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1. It all depends on where you play the versatile Thomas Muller, but the German is so strong and picking up the pieces around the box, you should either be playing him alongside or just behind Robert Lewandowski. Left winger Franck Ribery is now past his best, and if you are looking for a pacier option on the left hand side, Douglas Costa is your man.
With a very balanced side, you shouldn’t hav to mess with tactics, but just keep an eye on your opponents. If they are counter-attacking you regularly, you can drop a little deeper, or go for a more direct style of play, launching the ball forward to Lewandowski, and Muller feeding off the scraps.
The sixth-placed side the Premier League, surprisingly comes fifth in the best FIFA 17 teams to play as. But with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the side, there are so many men who can change a game on their own. The 90-rated David de Gea is behind an inconsistent defence to get you out of jail.
Formation wise, you will want to go for a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, depending on whether you want to play captain Wayne Rooney. Due to the Englishman’s desire to drop deep, he has been given a high defensive work-rate, which you can use to your advantage. This can free-up Paul Pogba, to use his 90-shot power and 90-long shots to get closer to goal.
Your main tactic will be to get the ball wide and swing the ball into Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who can use his six-foot five-inch frame and 90 overall rating to become a handful of defenders. But much like United themselves this season, you may find yourself unstoppable in some games, but near useless in others.
Best of the rest
If you are still not finding top gear with any of those five sides, we have more for you. With France, you get the brilliance of Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann, and the reliability of Hugo Lloris in goal. Belgium have the attacking trio of Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard and Dries Mertens, with Kevin de Bruyne the creator, Vincent Kompany, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen the defensive wall, and Thibaut Courtois the impressive shot stopper.
On the club scene, Paris Saint-Germain are strong all over the pitch, and Borussia Dortmund are blessed with outrageous pace in the attacking third.
