West Australia Warriors: Stoinis returns to the West

Marcus Stoinis confirms a return to the West.

Langer rebuilds squad in aim to break drought

Justin Langer has continued to build his squad for the 2017/18 season with the announcement that Marcus Stoinis is returning to the WACA after spending four years in Victoria. Western Australia has three of their members on Cricket Australia contracts with all-rounders Ashton Agar and Hilton Cartwright joining Mitchell Marsh with contract upgrades. Marsh will hope that he can find form and consistency to get him back to representing Australia at Test Level.

Langer went straight to work after the announcement that Adam Voges was to retire from first-class cricket, and with fast bowler Nathan Rimmington returning home to Queensland, Stoinis will assume more bowling responsibilities throughout the summer.

When asked about the return of Stoinis, Langer responded, “We’re thrilled to have Marcus (Stoinis) coming home to West Australia, not only because he’s an extremely talented player but he’s a great character as well. Young Matt Spoors is an exciting young talent. I love his dancing feet; a lot of kids these days have really slow footwork, but Matt’s got really fast batting feet.”

Matthew Spoors was signed to the Rookie List after impressing the WA Selection Panel after being the only Western Australia representative selected in the Australia Under 19s Squad.

Langer was very optimistic regarding the chances of his side of claiming a drought-breaking Sheffield Shield and the side is aiming to return to the top of the One Day competition.

Langer said: “All the players have worked really hard in the pre-season and the comradery is unbelievable. A number of players who were the ‘young ones’ now have four or five years’ experience.

“12 players have been Australian representatives, and that’s a great tribute to the program we’re running here at the WACA.”

“On paper, this side looks amazing, but it’s how we gel on the field that counts.”

Contracted Players 2017/18: Ashton Agar, Hilton Cartwright, Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Bancroft, Jason Behrendorff, William Bosisto, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Cameron Green, Joshua Inglis, Michael Klinger, Simon Mackin, Shaun Marsh , David Moody, Joel Paris, Jhye Richardson, D’Arcy Short, Marcus Stoinis, Ashton Turner, Andrew Tye, Jonathan Wells, Sam Whiteman.

Rookie List: Alex Bevilaqua, Jake Carder, Kyle Gardiner, Clint Hinchliffe, Matthew Kelly, Matthew Spoors.
