As golf’s elite descend upon the Conway Farms Golf Club, who will be sitting pretty at the top as 70 get whittled down to 30 in time for the final leg of the Tour Championship?
American Jordan Spieth currently tops the standings followed closely by fellow countrymen Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson. All 70 players will be looking for strong performances and no one will want to falter at the final hurdle. So who will be favourites for this week’s event?
The American is the heavy favourite to become player of the year due to winning five times this season, including the US PGA Championship. Thomas currently lies second in the FedEx Cup and will use last week’s win as inspiration to try and claim the number one spot.
Thomas is the in-form player in golf right now, winning the last two out of three events and finishing ninth or better in five of his last nine competitions overall. The course should suit the American’s game since accuracy and length are required off the tee which Thomas has in abundance.
With the pressure mounting, Thomas doesn’t appear to be showing any signs of nerves. At the Dell Technologies Championship last week, he kept his concentration and nerve whilst everyone around him faltered. Despite being only 24, he shows the serious bottle that will make him a future star in the game.
The big hitting American is joint favorite with Thomas for a good reason; the 33-year-old is the Defending Champion and has won the event twice before. This, mixed in with a poor result last week, and Johnson has something to prove.
Johnson may have dropped from first to third in the FedEx Cup standings but that doesn’t rule him out at all. The American has won four times this year including a big physical and psychological victory against Jordan Spieth in a playoff only a few weeks ago.
Johnson dominated last year’s event, winning by a comfortable three shot margin. Another result like that this year will certainly strengthen the Americans cause as he continues his journey to the Tour Championship. One thing is for sure though – Johnson will certainly not want a repeat of last year when he threw away a nearly unassailable lead in the FedEx cup standings.
Casey has finished fifth or better in three of his last four events, which includes a fourth place finish in the Dell Technologies Championship. Casey’s impressive stretch is even longer if you want to throw in his fifth place finish at the Travelers Championship.
The Englishman is playing some of his best and most consistent golf this year and has finished runner-up in this event twice, both times to Dustin Johnson.
The 40-year-old currently lies in eighth place in the FedEx Cup standings and is yet to pick up a win this season. A victory this weekend, however, will certainly catapult Casey up the standings and will really help in his charge to the finals.
As the remaining players battle it out for the remaining places one thing is for sure; we are set for a blockbuster finish as the likes of Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson commence battle over the next two tournaments. Although it’s not clear who’ll win, there will be guaranteed drama.
