Evelynn Rework – LoL Champion Breakdown

Evelynn, the Agony’s Embrace, is getting a rework! How does the shadowy demoness stack up in the current meta?


Ever since her release, Evelynn has always been a pain to balance. The passive camouflage made her ganks unavoidable unless you were hugging your turret, but if Eve didn’t get those early kills, she tended to fall off in the late game. With the upcoming rework, Riot took some bold steps that should preserve Evelynn’s identity while adding a lot of tools to her toolkit. Let’s take a look!

Champion overview

Passive: Demon Shade

Once Evelynn stays out of combat for several seconds, she’s enveloped by Demon Shade. If her health drops to a critical level, she’ll quickly recover while her passive is active. At level 6, Demon Shade grants camouflage, making Evelynn invisible to any foes, except nearby champions, control wards, and turrets.

As soon as you unlock your ultimate, the passive is the same it was pre-rework, except it has a heal thrown on top of it. That being said, Evelynn’s early game will take a hit since she’ll no longer be able to use her invisibility to pull off clutch ganks. Now, Eve’s goal will be power farming to level 6 and unlocking her camouflage as fast as possible.

Q: Hate Spike

Evelynn lashes out in a target direction, damaging the first enemy hit. If Hate Spike finds a target, Evelynn’s next three spells or auto attacks will deal bonus damage to it. If her target is a monster, a portion of Hate Spike’s cooldown will be refunded. After the first cast, Evelynn can recast the ability up to three times, firing lines of spikes through the nearest enemies. Hate Spike prioritizes Evelynn’s current target.

This will be Evelynn’s bread and butter. The first part of the skill shot looks easy to hit, and the cooldown reduction from monster should make it simple for Eve to clear jungle camps. The second part of the ability—the actual Hate Spikes—is all-too-familiar to seasoned Eve players, and you’ll definitely want to spam it as much as possible.

W: Lust Dust

Evelynn marks a champion or a monster, briefly revealing her location to the target. Hitting the marked enemy will expunge Lust Dust, refunding its mana cost and slowing the target. If the mark lasts for a couple of seconds, expunging it will cause Evelynn to charm her target. If the target is a champion, their magic resistance will be decreased for several seconds. If the target is a monster, charm duration will be increased and the spell will deal additional damage. Casting Lust Dust doesn’t break Evelynn’s passive.

Phew, that’s a lot of targeting action! It’s not entirely clear at the moment, but we’d guess that Lust Dust works the same way Kindred’s marks do—as in, you can cast it from a pretty big distance. If that’s the case, marking a champion will let them know that Eve is coming to get them. And while the most straightforward way of using this ability would be marking an overextend lane a few seconds before going in for a gank, Lust Dust opens up some interesting mind game possibilities. For example, even if you aren’t planning to gank him, you could mark an enemy laner to make him play more passive against a struggling teammate.

E: Whiplash

Evelynn impales her target, applying on-hit effects and dealing damage as a percentage of the target’s maximum health. If Evelynn has Demon Shade up, Whiplash will become empowered, making Eve dash to her target and deal damage to all nearby enemies.

This looks like a great way to start a gank or close the distance in a key teamfight. When combined with Lust Dust [W], the empowered Whiplash will make it easy to stick to your target. The only issue is you’ll have to get quite close to pull off this combo.

R: Widowmaker

Evelynn releases a surge of demonic energy, becoming untargetable and damaging all enemies in front of her. After using the ability, Evelynn jumps backward. This spell deals additional damage to low-health enemies.

Ever wanted a Xayah ultimate on your average assassin? Well, there you go! Widowmaker looks like a great finishing move to use after going through your full rotation. At her core, Evelynn is a very squishy champion, so getting a reliable way to dodge incoming damage and get out of fights is most welcome. Also, we can’t help but wonder if you could use Widowmaker to jump walls for unconventional gank routes or, say, for Baron steals.

Enveloping Shadows

Evelynn remains the shadow assassins that we all know and love. Her kit got more complex, which should make her much more versatile in teamfights and skirmishes, and we can already imagine the combo potential of Lust Dust [W] and Whiplash [E]. As for Widowmaker [R], it should allow Evelynn to build damage items without the fear of getting deleted in teamfights. Expert Eve players will definitely appreciate the jump back part of her ultimate since it will let them seamlessly navigate through teamfights.

That being said, Evelynn does have a very obvious weakness—she has to reach level 6 to use her passive. And while the current meta might not punish her for this, we can’t help wondering if she’ll be susceptible to invades from junglers like Elise or Lee Sin. Historically, farm-heavy junglers have always been at a disadvantage on the competitive stage because they have to give up a ton of tempo to unlock their potential. Of course, some of them (like Kayne or Kha’Zix) find their uses, but it remains to be seen if Evelynn will join them.
