The Mavericks have struggled this season, and sit at the bottom of the Western Conference with a record of 1-7. Their last game was a 104-89 loss to the Utah Jazz, in which Harrison Barnes and Wesley Matthews were both shut down, combining for only 6 of 19 from the field. The Mavericks are yet to win on the road this season (0-3) and are unlikely to break that trend in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.
Like the Mavericks, the Clippers (4-2) are riding a losing streak after defeats to the Pistons and Warriors in their last two outings. They’ve been a strong defensive unit so far this season, but gave up 141 points in their last game to the Warriors. Put simply, the Clippers could do nothing to stop a Golden State side that was out to prove a point and shot 58% from the field as a team. Draymond Green showed why he’s the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, holding Blake Griffin to only ten shots for the night.
Keys to the game
Defense – The Clippers have been a strong unit defensively, but got blitzed by Golden State in their last match. They need to showcase the defensive strength that led them to four straight wins to start the season.
Blake Griffin – Griffin has entered the MVP discussion after his early season form, but had a tough game against the Warriors (16 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists). He’s primed to bounce back against the Mavericks.
Jordan’s boards – DeAndre Jordan has averaged more than 16 boards this season, well above his career average of 10.2. He’ll need to find that magic again on the offensive and defensive glass tonight.
Matchup to watch
Harrison Barnes vs Danilo Gallinari – Barnes may have had a tough game in his last outing but has looked impressive this season, averaging 16 points and 6 rebounds. Danilo Gallinari has also been a bright spark for the Clippers, and it will be interesting to see these two forwards go at it.
Dallas Mavericks projected lineup
PG – Dennis Smith Jr | SG – Wesley Matthews | SF – Harrison Barnes | PF – Dirk Nowitzki | C – Nerlens Noel |
Los Angeles Clippers projected lineup
PG – Patrick Beverley | SG – Austin Rivers | SF – Danilo Gallinari | PF – Blake Griffin | C – DeAndre Jordan |
Even with his struggles against the Warriors, Griffin has still averaged 23 points and 8 rebounds on the season. He’s also shooting at 42.4% from beyond the arc, a career-best mark. Facing a struggling Dallas side, Griffin is poised to put up huge fantasy numbers.
The over / under is 204, but the Clippers should have their way offensively, and will carry the total points over.
The Clippers will bounce back to winning ways with ease, downing the Mavericks 114-94.
