There is no doubt that Carmelo Anthony is one of the best players to don a New York Knicks jersey in recent years. However, his time with the team was marred by frustration and a lack of success as the organization and roster were in a constant state of flux and turmoil.
Regardless, Anthony still managed to shine on the hardwood and give Knicks fans a show to remember. It’s sad to see him leave in these circumstances as there still remains a question of what could have been, but there is no doubt that he brought what joy he could to New York fans everywhere.
Here are his best moments as a Knick.
1 2013 NBA scoring champion
Undoubtedly the greatest moment of Anthony's NBA career and tenure with the Knicks was when he beat out Kevin Durant to secure his first and only scoring title. His impressive scoring run over the 2012/13 season ended with him averaging 28.7 points a game. It remains the only major accolade on the 33-year-old's resume and was the catalyst for a playoff run which ended in the conference semi-finals. Without his consistent scoring, the Knicks never would have finished second in the Eastern Conference. The award is a testament to his renowned scoring ability.
2 62 points at the Garden
A historic moment in his time in New York came on January 24, 2014. Anthony scored a career-high 62 points with 23 made field goals, shooting 66% from the field. This was a Knicks franchise scoring record and set the mark for most points scored by one player in the famed Madison Square Garden (a record previously held by Kobe Bryant). The four-time Olympian sat out the final seven minutes of the game, so this celebrated night could have been even more impressive.
3 Clutch scoring against Chicago
Anthony has hit many clutch shots in his time with New York, but this performance was unparalleled. With Jeremy Lin and Amar'e Stoudemire out, the Knicks faced a Chicago Bulls team considered among the best in the NBA that was led by Derrick Rose, who was fresh from his MVP season. Anthony raced up the floor and hit a deep three with a hand right in his face, leveling the score and sending the game into overtime. Late in OT, Anthony took the ball to the same place on the court and drained a game-winning three, again with a hand in his face, to give the Knicks a one-point lead with eight seconds left on the clock. He finished the game with 43 points.
4 Knicks first playoff win since 2001
The Knicks qualified for the playoffs as the seventh seed and were matched up with eventual champions the Miami Heat. Miami entered Game 4 with a 3-0 lead and their big three – LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh – whereas New York had injury problems. With Tyson Chandler, Baron Davis, Lin, Iman Shumpert and Stoudemire all missing the game for various reasons, the ten-time All-Star was forced to step up. He led the team to their first win in a playoff game since 2001, scoring 41 points and bringing some joy to the fans at Madison Square Garden.
5 Triple double against Boston
Another of Melo's most impressive nights again came at the MSG. In a game against bitter rivals the Boston Celtics, Anthony produced arguably his most complete all-round performance as a Knick. He drained shot after shot, crashed the glass, shared the sugar to stuff the stat sheet and finished with 35 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in stylish fashion. It was a performance for the ages against a Celtics team that had knocked the Knicks out of the playoffs the season before.
