Who made Ghostwire: Tokyo?

Ghostwire: Tokyo has had a rather troubled development but has managed to release pretty strong. All of the major changes have left some confused as to who even made it. Here's what you need to know.

Who Made Ghostwire: Tokyo?

If you're looking for a simple answer, Ghostwire: Tokyo was made by Tango Gameworks, the team behind The Evil Within 1 and 2. They carried over some of that horror theming and atmosphere to Ghostwire: Tokyo without making it an overt horror game.

Instead, it is fairer to call it an action-adventure game with horror theming. This means they can inject scary stories and spooky creatures, without necessarily needing to illicit a jump scare.

We were rather favourable of the game in our review, praising the world, side quests and general tone whilst criticising its open-world design. You can check that out right here.

Why this answer is a little complicated

Most people's first introduction to the game was via Ikuma Nakamura's announcement and general bubbliness at E3 2019. At the time, she was the creative director of the game and was accompanied by the founder of the studio, Shinji Mikami.

Having previously spearheaded Resident Evil, Dino Crisis and The Evil Within, this was a tacit sign of approval. Unfortunately, Ikumi Nakamura stepped away from the team mere months after E3 and Kenji Kimura took over as Director. Although Shinji Mikami and Ikumi Nakamura are names that come up when discussing the game, Ghostwire: Tokyo is the product of much more than just their work.

Ikumi is now the lead of her own company and Shinji Mikami has stated he would like for his studio to work on non-horror titles. It's hard to tell where the future of the company lies now but, if it's like Ghostwire: Tokyo, I'll be looking forward to their next project.
